How many of you that are 3/4 or 1 ton have busted 1/2 ton stuff?

I was running 38" tires at the time.

The $3058 breaks down as follows:

12 Bolt
Warn Full Floater $850
Detroit Locker $560
4.56 gears and install kit $165

Dana 44
Warn Alloy Shafts $750
760x joints $30
Warn Premium Hubs $50
4.56 gears and install kit $153
Detroit Locker $500

Thats even conservative... /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif

i blew my 12 bolt possi apart climbing a Sand bowl with 33's /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif put 8 holes through the diff cover /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Shortly after that the 42's and 1-ton gear came to me.

how do you get it to come to you? i offer it beer & pizza and it still won't follow me home? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Well I was stupid, when my carrier bearings and pinion bearings went out on my 12 bolt I had it rebuilt, auburnized and regeared for over $1500 /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif This was before my life at CK5 /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

But I never had the money to get the front end rebuilt and regeared. When I decided I NEEDED 4wd, my buddy talked me into doing the 3/4 ton swap and even with buying the 14bff and parts, and new Dana 44 with matching gears, limited slip, and 8 lug swap parts, I still saved money over just getting the front end rebuilt...try and find someone to rebuild a dana 44 cheap, not imposible but no ones likes to do these axles /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

So I didn't really do the swap out of necessity from breaking parts, but for cost effectiveness and added strength /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I had a 1310 CV blow up on me. It was the only 1/2 ton piece of equipment on my rig.

It was the straw that broke the camels back and I now do cross stitch in my free time.

But for some reason I cant quit coming to CK5 and sandbag the message ofrums

2 front 10 bolt shafts
2 3/4 ton D44 moser stub shafts
1 quick loc locker
several spindles and lockouts when shafts broke

I hope to test the D60 in disney Ok. on the 23rd of this month.

I'm Still 1/2 ton for now, but got the 1 ton's almost completed in my garage...
I've broken:
- 3 12 bolt ring and pinons... (each lasted a little over a year. Two of the times i realized it because of a puddle of 90wt, a big hole in the diff cover and a piece of a gear sticking through) /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif
- 1 12 bolt rear axle shaft..
- 1 D44 front u-joint and tweeked the ears on both shafts making it difficult to remove.

I'm hard on my junk, and it's my daily driver.
For me, enough was enough dumping money into sheit thats breakin... I Want bigger tires, a front locker, and lower gears... can't justify re-gearing half ton stuff. (then breaking it again) /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif

...And plus, isn't it bragging rights if you got 1 tons?

Overall I think I see the true point of this post. A lot of people seem to spend a lot of money putting 1-ton axles, lockers, and big tires on their rig before ever really trying them out.

I'm going to 3/4 ton cause I need the gears. I haven't broke anything yet with 1/2 ton and 33's even though I drive it with my foot to the floor. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif I'm going to 36's next week and with a mild 350, 465, and my foot I don't like being broke. I'm trying to overbuild everything so i can enjoy my truck.

Well I will be rolling on 38's with the 3/4 ton (really 1/2 ton for the most part) with a van 14 bolt and welded gears...But I have extra shafts and u-joints and don't have a problem with changing them...All be it sometimes not in the best or most helpful areas...
I am going to leave the front unlocked...And that will help it last longer..That way I can use it till funds come avalable that I can afford a D60..
I have more on my shopping list other then the D60 for now if one comes in my lap for sheap then It is own,if not I can wait...No biggie...
I am only going to a D60 because of my choice in tires that I want to run.. /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

Even though I flat refuse to go 1 ton, 3/4 ton, Mongo 45 ton..............

I've grenaded two 12 bolts....One went about a year and about 10G miles before it finally went. Grenaded the rebuild job on that in a month.......

I wheeled for almost 8 years with an open 10 and 12 bolt combo with 3.73s and 35s.I broke nothing.I then upgraded to a 44 with 4.10s and an Auburn (and recently added Warn shafts with 760s) and a 12 bolt with Moser shafts and a Detroit.Only ran the built 12 bolt for about a year and swapped it out for the 14 bolt that came in my body donor, not because I had any trouble with the 12 bolt but just because I had it.

In a little over 4 years Iv only broken 2 297s and one long side inner. One of those joints and the shaft happened at the same time /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Climbing a wet granite ledge, tires spinning, felt like it was gonna grab so I gave it more gas (alot more),all 4 tires came off the ground, and then a BANG /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

When I start breakin joints every trip,I will buy some CTMs,When I start breakin shafts every trip,I will git a 60.

So I guess I will remain a "Slightly Sexy Poser Mall Poser"

33" tires

Front 10 Bolt
2-297 u-joints
1-560 u-joints
1-short side shaft

10 Bolt Rear
2 teeth off the ring and pinion and severly gouged cover

Now 3/4 ton

1st occassion was within 100 miles of getting the new camper... /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif shelled the $hit outta the 10 bolt, but figured, wellllll, /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif had a lotta miles, and so just found a re-man 10 bolt posi to match up (3:42s)... $1k later.. (over the counter.... /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif )
fast-forward about 12 months or so.. and discovered axle seal leak on 1 side. Didn't have time to mess with it myself, so off to the neighborhod shop. They called and said they had some issues getting the axle out ("C" clip sytle)... due to the splines being twisted /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
Another $400 spent and stil with a set of 10 bolts.

Next run to my favorite recycle center, and i discovered he had an 80 3/4 ton p/u he was parting out. $200 later, i had my F&R axles! 4:10! /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
Another $300 in new brake parts, and $450 or so in tires & rims, and away we went!
Darn thing pulls like a dream now! MPG actually similar with the 15"->16" swap.
Life is (now) good! /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
91 /forums/images/graemlins/burb.gif

right here..

busted axle u-joints, stub shafts, front carriers, rear ring and pinions, and spider gears..

for me the swap was needed...

Trashed a 10 bolt rear (chewed teeth off the ring and pinion)

Destroyed a 12 bolt rear when pinion bearing exploded. Trashed housing and all.

Now have a 14 bolt SF with Gov-Loc. 1 tons soon enough.

Never broken a 10 bolt front.

Always ran 35" BFGs, run 38.5 TSLs now
