How many of you wear Mechanix Wear gloves or soemthing similar

i am still wearing my cheapo gloves i got about 2 years ago. and when im grinding or cuting i got some hobart weldin glove i got for $15

Summit Racing has some gloves of the mechanix type but they are all synthetic leather. I used to work with cardboard in a warehouse all day and I could go through a regular pair of mechanix gloves in a few days. Wore right through the finger tips. However I needed something because in the winter my skin got dry, cracked, and then bled. Ended up stumbling upon those Summit ones for about $13 a pair and loved them. I have 4-5 pair right now even though I don't have that job anymore. Handy for winter work where you need dexterity but also don't want your hands exposed to the elements.

I don't know who makes them for summit but I did find a similar all leather product at Meijers Thrifty Acres (Walmart's Michigan and surrounding area competition) a while back and at Menards (Home Depot sorta place).

I only wear gloves when I'm welding...and I've spent 40+ hours a week for the last 20 years working with steel. I can't stand nitrile gloves, and will wear the cheap leather work gloves when I'm working with stuff I know is sharp. Other than that it's bare hands.

My hands are pretty tough now...and if that kind of work isn't what you normally do I can totally understand the need for gloves. OTOH there is only one way to get your hands to toughen up.

I have to wear Nitrile Gloves at work, Its a Requirement for handling Flight Hardware. I only wear them at home for cleaning my dirt bike filter and re-oiling it. Other then that, Im with ya Rene.

Yeah, some of us have office jobs :( and though the dress code is relaxed for us geeks, it's still :shame: to show up in oil-stained jeans and with black hands =))

I thought that's why we got married, so we didn't have to do that anymore? :dunno: :haha:

Sorry, I guess Im a bit more girly than you all are. :doah:

My other hobbies and work require a lot more sensitivity without gloves on. Ever since I started working on cars, I know it has gone down... But to keep things where they are I wear gloves.

Besides a few exceptions, I always use gloves.

If Im dealing with even somewhat stubborn bolts where I could possibly loose grip or slip, or have it suddenly come loose... I put on a pair of mechanix gloves. they are somewhat better than home depot "firm grip" brand, as i wore though that finger like no other.

Synthetic gloves are not nearly as durable as leather.

Soaking is very annoying. And it happens with all gloves, depending on how greasy the object your working with is. Its not worth skimping on protection because you dont want to get your gloves dirty. IF anything, have a dirty pair, and have a cleaner pair. Smooth leather doesnt soak up oil the way synthetics do. Not to say it doesnt, its just not the same way, just when you deal wit the thick layer of grease, the synthetics tend to get it in the pores, and everything you touch is now greasy.

Leather can be cleaned off relatively easily in comparison.

I got 3 pairs of fitted tanned cowhide leather at costco for 20 dollars. Lasts easily 3x longer than mechanicx. Heck, if ranchers used them for years, its good enough for me.

Light work always gets a pair of surgical gloves, as well as motor oil changes, etc.

Just think of it this way- not everyone reacts the same way to chemicals and irritants. Some people have skin of steel and others have sensitive skin. Use the protection you think you need.

Welding gloves for welding, (a pair for alum and a pair for regular)
general for general
light, for light.

And dont forget to wear your eye protection too.

I like the mechanix gloves..if I don't wear gloves, my skin gets real dry and peels..it's kinda gross.

When I was a foundryman, I got used to wearing gloves all day, ( had to, cause everything was either hot, sharp or covered in a mix of casting sand and hydraulic oil) so they don't bug me or anything.

Thought about buying gloves but just can't remember to get them when i'm at the auto parts store. :doah:

I'm usually bare. Plus if i start bleeding i just shove a bunch of grease in the wound. Stops the bleeding :D

LOl I have like six pairs of gloves:haha: I get em every year for christmas or my birthday. I use those or the diamond grip blue rubber gloves
