My 10 bolt w/gov-lock is on its last leg. Can you imagine that! So I really want to pick up a junkyard 14 bolt and dana 44 and replace my axles. Problem is I am on an extremely tight budget. So, what did you guys end up investing in your used axles to get them up to par? I know this has everything to do with initial condition and such but I am just looking for ballpark figures on commonly worn parts like seals, bearings, and maybe breaks.

Thanks

I bought my 14 bolt for $95 then just redid the brakes and that was it. I used the same bearings and seals and it's still in mytruck with no problems for the past 3 years. I did add the detroit but you don't HAVE to.

I bought my d44 and 14ff for $400 pulled the calipers off the 10bolt front bought some brackets for discs for 39.95(not the right ones for 14 bolt but with a couple pieces of metal from work they work) new front brake lines that went on the rear disc for 14.95 each(?) and bolted them in.also bought d44 front rotors(for the discs on rear) and reused the wheel studs on the rear. think they were like 30-40 bucks apiece.I did pull the carrier and weld up the spider gears though. about $20 for gear lube and gaskets an had to replace one inner seal on rear hub. hope this helps. if not just ingore me. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

And don't forget a new set of 8 lug wheels, ujoints etc etc etc etc. Then get ya some 44's, butcher up the fenders so they'll clear, take the doors off, weld in a monkey cage, and go finish it off by bashing some rocks. Then good luck if you should ever decide to sell the tractor. /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

Just being cynical. I'm a K5 enthusiist that likes to keep my rig more intact and under 10k lbs.

Hmmm

5.13s - about $160
Rebuild kit - shoot, I forget, maybe another $150...
Open carrier - $free.99 from tRustyk5 /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif
spring perches from Rockjunkies (iirc)- $50
Disc brakes from Derbinator (iirc)- around $200 with all the fiddly bits
shock mounts - $free.99 prototypes from Tony P /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
Axleshaft bolts - $free.99 from That K30 Guy /forums/images/graemlins/woot.gif
New U-bolts - $30 or so
Spring plates - $free.99 prototypes from Willyswanter /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif
Welded diff - $$free.99, done by Mr Welder himself, KidJethro.

So around $590 out of pocket, but I'm going to be adding a Detroit to it pretty soon hopefully so it will be around $900 all said and done. Considering what it has in it, I guess it's worth the money...

Thanks to everyone that helped me with parts for it, please note that no fewer than 7 CK5 members contributed parts or labor to this axle, and of those 5 were freebies. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif Did I mention that CK5 rules? Sorry if I forgot anyone... /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif /forums/images/graemlins/doah.gif

If your lookin to upgrade everything, and plan on takin it off road alot, doin some funky stuff, /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif it will cost you some money as i am finding out, but will be worth it when completed. /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif But if you want to save some cash and don't really take the ride off road much, or don't do anything extreme, then just have it rebuilt and install some kind of good locker unit in there. /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif Just my opinion though. /forums/images/graemlins/doah.gif

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I guess I am convinced...not that it was that hard...I need to go ahead and junk my 10 bolt. Adding up the average figures it looks like if I find the right axle I could end up with a 14 bolt and a detroit for less than $500. Since I need to re-gear anyway(3.08 gears are worthless) I think it will be cheaper to do the axle swap. I figure for the 10 bolt $160x2 for gears $200 for install kits and a couple more hundred to replace the gov lock with something and a brake rebuild...well you get the picture. So I guess now all I need is some axles....I'm off to the for sale forum.

Where are y'all getting your bearings and seals so cheap? I priced them in LMC (because I know they are factory parts) and it came out to quite a bit more than that. I know I want Timkin bearings and high quality seals (I dont know of any brand names). I'm doing disks and the works too /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif
