How reliable is the 5.3 motor? Is the 5.7 a better engine?

Also, with minor upgrades (cam, intake and electronics), the 5.3 can crank out some serious power. And the 6.0 is one bad mamma jamma!!

I like my old 5.7:D

That being said, I'm saving for the day I can swap in a 6.0:pimp:

Old motors just sound better to me. Nothing beats an old school stroker sound or a big block. I dont care if a ls can make ten times the power, old school is still way cooler IMO. But if you care about gas mileage and such.... well thats another story lol. (I dont lol):thumb:

215K and my 5.7 is still running strong no major issues yet. I have no experience with the 5.3, but it sounds like a solid motor none the less.

Is it just me....or does it seem like this thread needs a poll?

5.7s are dumb reliable. Mine had 270k+ on it before it died a horrible death. I did do a cam/lifter/t-chain/gasket/carb/dist. Overhaul at 230k. Didnt touch it again until i pulled it out

With that being said I have a 5.3 in the family that has 268k on it. Doesn't leak a drop. Doesn't use much oil between services, and has never been in to

I hate oil leakers. I haven't seen an ls leak. Maybe some seeping, but that's it. That settles this argument for me. Ls all the way

It's good to see a thread on this subject. More folks in the engine replacment delemma need to see and understand the benifits of the LS engine. Yes, the harrness conversion can be intimadating to some, but the overall performance is exceeds the 5.7.
\5.7 great engine for it's time.solid and very relieable. But, what you would pay for a rebuild comes close to the cost of a good used 5.3.
\All I know is that my stock 5.3 walks circles around the stock, carbed 350 in horsepower, torque and fuel economy.
\ The old gen small-block is beginning to join the ranks of the flathead Ford. And why not? she's had an epic run, almost 50 years!

We have 4 2500 hd's with the 6.0 on 2 of the 2010 trucks we have had engine problems at just over 100k one broke a valve spring and the other ate a camshaft and then needed a complete rebuild

With that said I still want a 6.0 bad

The terminology in this thread is rather silly. Try using Gen I and Gen III. There is a 5.7 Liter Gen I, Gen II, and Gen III small block Chevrolet engine.

No.

A Gen I SBC is anything from 1955 - 1991. They were still used after 1991, but that is when the Gen II's started being used (the Gen III's debuted in the 1997 Corvette)

Gen II SBC's are LT1's in 1992-1996 Corvettes and 1993-1997 Camaro/Firebirds, and some GM full size cars, LT4's in 1996 Corvettes and Camaros, and the 4.3 version they put in 1994-1996 Caprices. These engines are not much different than a Gen I

A Gen III (often called LSx) is the newer SBC's. Used first in the 1997 Corvette, the following year in the Camaro and Firebird, and then by pickups after that.

I don't understand why anyone would take that much potential for power and driveability and dumb it down with a carb.

It's like having your cake and not being able to eat it. mmmm, that's some good cake there. But don't eat it. DON'T EAT IT!

:D

So dumb guys like me don't need a laptop to get my rig running right...plus I'd still get a stout bottom end, great heads, roller cam and a motor good for over 200k. I realize i'm in the minority here with this one. I don't wheel upside down, or at all anymore really, and i'm a huge fan of the Q-jet...

Replacing the EFI for a carb on that engine does seem like putting wagon wheels on a indy car.

Its becoming pretty common in the muscle car world. I don't think it would be horrible in a mostly street driven square body.

Guess i'll have to start studying these here fancy computer machines so I can keep up with the cool kids...
