Does anyone know how to check a tranny(th350) with out installing it in the truck to find out if it works or not?

Reason I ask is. I got one from a person but cant remember if they said it was good or need to be rebuilt. I called a handfull of tranny shops and asked if they could test it and they all said we dont have the proper tools to check the condition of a tranny not installed in the truck.

Thanks

As far as I'm aware the only way to do that is with a tranny dyno and that may well cost you as much as getting the box overhauled anyway. If you got it dyno'd and it was bad, you'd then have to get it repaired anyway.

Only thing I can think of is keeping the tranny sitting as it's installed, and drop the pan. If there are large metal chunks in it,rebuild it. If there aren't, it might still be bad, but as mentioned, short of dynoing it, no way I'm aware of to find out.

I'd just rebuild it. Agreeing with the others cost more to test than it's worth. So rebuild or use it as a core on a rebuilt one;)

agreed again. Tranny dyno is the only option to REALLY test a trans without it in a vehicle, and most shops just don't have one.
