How To Clean Carburater Jets On 2 Barrel Carburater With Electric Choke On A 454?

Got a clogged jet inside a carburaCar due to her vehicle having a hard start and creating backfires, and struggling at idle.

I'm wondering whether to to get an edlebrock performance 2 barrel carburator or clean the Qjet Carburater 2 barrel before I later get a fuel injection system
 
I think you mean 4 barrel or 4v.

On a street driven rig a carb is fine but you need to know some basics. A quadrajet is not super complicated but is more complicated than an Edelbrock carb.

Lots of u tube vids look at those to familiarize yourself with the procedure to take it apart

Youre right it is a 4 barrel. It has secondarys behind the main "2 hole" barrals
 
If you're good at pulling things apart and keeping order - you can get it back together. just keep organized. And if you use any air to blow things out be careful, I once spent a bit of time looking for a jet that I blew across the front yard as it slipped out of my grasp while I was blowing the air hose through it...

I was glad the carb kit came with a new "BB" (steel ball) for the accelerator pump circuit because the original took off like a bullet when I applied the air blow gun to the passages in the carb,never to be seen again..the little spring that goes on top of it was history too..

I'd get a brass float if possible for the Q-jet,the OEM foam ones are known to get soggy and sink when exposed long enough to ethanol gas..
 
Order the quadrajet book by Cliff Ruggles. He also has a forum with mind numbing amounts of Qjet knowledge. As recommended by John/80'427

I have always used the instructions from the rebuild kit and always had success.
Never tried to tune it just put it back to stock.
It was pretty easy
 
Start the beast and get it hot.

Then, take the air cleaner assembly off and rev it up.
Put your hand over the 2 bbbs opening in the top and choke the air off and open the throttle up, at least half way.
Just before it dies pull your hand off, then, when it recovers, do it 2-3 more times.
Sometimes, this can really make a motor run better.

Can't wait to get fuel injection installed later.

Before that I will keep the vehicle Carburated
 
run some seafoam thru it. Get it warmed up, put some in the tank and thru a vacuum port till it dies, let it sit. Then run the piss outta of it.
 
Q-jets rebuilds are easy and WAY cheaper than a new carb that you'll have to do an initial setup on anyway.
If you can tune the new one you can surely rebuild the old one if it comes to that and it's already setup for your vehicle.
Personally I'm with the Seafoam like r454rat mentioned. Great stuff! It'll dissolve the clog if you give it time.

With a basic carb kit type rebuild you're fully correct. Many Q jets these days need more than a kit thrown at them unfortunately.

I have looked into it, and by the time I buy the jigs to bush throttle shafts, and correct the effects of age and mileage myself, a rebuilt carb from a respectable builder looks better, and better.

This is a topic with far too many variables. It is something everyone has to decide on their own, with their own individual situation taken into consideration if there is any deviation from stock.
