How to I.D. a 400 cid

If you're refering to the two drilled holes that isn't it. The relief is cast into the balancer.

That does not make sense. If it is balanced then the weight would have to be taken off the balancer AFTER it was cast, so they could spin it, find the heavy side and therefore drill that side so as to balance the balancer....right?

Take a close look at this pic, especially the left side. You can see that the balancer is cast with an irregular shape on the outside edge. This is the balancing portion of the weight that is removed.

I get that, but read what you wrote and read my response and look at the pics that were posted by beast. An as cast unit, would probably not be balanced.

Just my .02.

Yes they are balanced, that is why the material is missing from that area.

A balancer for a 350 would not have that weight removed in the casting process. It would be full round.

I think the problem is that you're confusing "balancing an engine" with an "externally balanced engine".
The 400 crank has a permanent "heavy spot", so the counter-balance is always going to be in the same place. Since the harmonic balancer always goes on the same way (thanks to a woodruff key), the heavy side of it can always be in the same place.

From there, any drilled holes are for finish balancing. And, if I'm not mistaken, any holes drilled in the harmonic balancer are strictly for balancing the balancer itself.
The crankshaft is balanced by removing material from the crankshaft itself.

If the crank depended on a specific harmonic balancer being matched to it, then you'd have to get your engine completely re-balanced if your harmonic balancer went bad.

Does that makes sense?

Well I felt around it,its completely round no cut out on it....So I guess I have a 350 then. The PO pulled the old motor an trans and put in a 350/350.Then tried to hot rod the motor a bit, headers, straight pipes w/glass packs,a edelbroock performer RPM manifold with a different carb. And for some reason took off the fan shroud, which I have seen several people do.. :dunno:
