How to id my dually rear

What I thought was a 14 bolt is not... I changed the fluid when I got the truck but never gave the rear a second glance

1989 v3500 crewcab 3 + 3
rear has 10 bolts... full floating... squared off at the bottom...
how can I determine if its a d60 or d70... Ive looked at pics and they look the same to me

I've got the same truck if it is a pick up bed dually. It is a Dana 70HD. The only other dually rear end that would work for the dually pick up bed style truck is a wide track 14 Bolt FF and I'm pretty sure that only went in 90 and 91. You already figured out it isn't that one!

Contrary to what some think, there was never a Dana 60 dually axle made.

If it's a cab and chasis truck, post up.

Those pics remind me of those little books you used to get as a kid where they had 2 almost identical pictures on the same page and you had to look for the tiny differences

Other then the extra 2 lines where the axle tubes would go those pics look identical to me I'm sure somebody will say that the d70 in the bottom pic is bigger but that wouldn't help out much when your comparing a 2inch pic to a axle under your truck

Look under the lower diff cover bolts- the housing sticks farther down on a D70.

GM used the D70HD under older dually pickups. Why? Who knows.

Cam, go measure the tubes. If they are 4" diameter, its a D70HD.

They never put rear dana 60's in the 89 dually crew cab. It should be the 70HD as mentioned above

If the cover has never been off, there is a tad attached by 2 of the bolts. It will tell you gear ratio, posi , and rear end model.

I got a Dana 70 out of a 89 dually Chevy and mine is a 70HD3 ,it has 3.5 dia
tube and is necked down at each backing plate flange. It also has the largest pinion offset and requires a fiew parts that are unique to this model. If you have a HD3 it will be cast twice into the center section, one that can be seen from the front and one the rear. The best way is to call Drivetrain Superstores with your BOM# and there will be no guess work. The BOM# is located on the tube about 6-10" from the cast end and is a 6 digit number(I think?) . It was stamped in so lightly that I had a very hard time finding it.
