how to measure leaf springs....

Ok so this is going to be a long post.. the jist.. how do you tell what size lift leafs you have????


so now the easy question is out... the long post :haha:

back in 1997 I had a guy lift my truck.. so it would pass nj strict lift laws (and I had a dirt driveway and not the tools like I do now :bow: )

so he put 12" rear leafs on the truck and 13" fronts
I already had a 3" body lift
was going with rockwells and 53" michelins.... well nj changed their lift laws so I had to bring the truck down... it sat for 7 years..then viola end of 2004 on the road....


I went from this (without body lift)

just realized the rear block is already removed from the drivers side.. and pass side is up in the air via hilift jack...
this will give you an idea of how high the back was...

now here is what I did...

I took the 13" front leafs off.... put superlift softride front 6" leafs
removed the factory tapered block from the back
the block is like 2.5" on one side and 2.75" on the other....

howevever if you look at the pics.. I supposedly still have the 12" rear leafs on the truck... how can I tell if they are really 12's or if it was 12" with my stock block equaling say 10" leafs plus my block?????

that would mean remove block and it is like close to 9" rear....



any help... just curious... a bud was over and I told him my rear 12" leafs were still on the truck.. and we were looking and the math isnt adding up anymore??????? :crazy:

you should have 8" rear springs... witha 12" kit the rear springs are 8" not sure aboout the 2.5" bolck though...
 
im not sure they even make a 10" rear spring? i had a set i picked up and called skyjacker to find out what size the were, they told me run a string eye to eye then from the string to the bottom of the leaf pack and that is what size it is, if they are off the truck then they will be a couple inches off unloaded.

Wow forgot about this thread

Just went out... string from eye to eye and measure down to bottom of pack is 9.5" with full weight of truck resting on it.

Ground to top of well is 44.5" and front is 45.75".. maybe ord flip 2in level me out...
 
The springs don't look like 12" and 13" in those pictures. Can you post new pictures of the actual rear springs?

with 3" BL and the 13" front leafs and 40" hawgs. guy that installed them was having an issue that after truck sat on leafs, total weight still had leafs sitting at 13" so he sent them out to be lowered to 12" but had issues.. its a long story..

but he said they were 13" front and 12" rear (musta been 9.5" leaf and 2.5" block..)

I'm confused what it is you're trying to do. If you are running 6" fronts, go buy 6" rears. Install and be happy. If it isn't what you want, throw the 2.5" block on or a zero rate and more the rear axle back, it will look more centered.
 
I'm contemplating lifting my truck up more. If I go with shackle flip that is great... however I'm thinking of going with leafs instead... so I know I have 6" up front.. so I can go 8" for 2 more inches... they don't make 10" so it is either 8" or 12" and 12 is just too much as I have had that before....

so step 1.. figure out what I have.. if I had 6" in back I CAN get 8" rear... simple.. figure out what you have first..

ive been thinking of getting 39.5 boggers or 42's and they will not fit on what I have now so trying to go back and figure out what I have...
that's all simple... easy peasy...

I don't think this would apply to rear springs, even stock rear springs have some arch to them.

they (Superlift, Skyjacker, ect) don't make 12" lift rear springs either. 8" is all there is for 52" rear springs and 6" for 56" rear springs.
 
do your rear springs have a number on them, like 01-322?

Ive got 56in rear... they cant be 6in ..else there woulda been 6in block...

These are custom... not superlift or anyone
