While I don't fully share the same sentiment as JMS he is more right than wrong.
The ether trick is something that I have used, use and will use again, however it is the last resort. There are too many variables for the first time, ignorant user to be done real safe.
Air temps, tire temps, ether temp etc all play a role in how much ether is needed to seat the bead and not blow the tire off the rim. If you use this method start small and work your way up to the amount that is needed.
I have seated the same tire bead in 100 degree temps and -15 temps and they were two totally different things. Hot temps equal small amount of ether big boom, cold equals large amount of ether with a bit sprayed on the tire to light it on fire to warm it up enough to even move.
Just be careful with the ether method.
