I need to rebuild my edelbrock 1405 because it will start flooding if I floor it too much. Also, it's never been any good when I get the truck on anything steep.

I'd like to rebuild it hopefully so that I can keep it running while doing some of the steep stuff in moab. while I'm at it, maybe rejet it to get the most out of it.

standard rebuild guides are easy enough to find, but is there some guide on how to keep it from flooding out on the steep stuff?

Off road needles!! Stupid easy to put in.

I also have a good book you can borrow if ya like.

I play on the dunes and my 1406 works great on angles now, where it flooded to crap before.

norcal chris did some work to his back on his yellow k5 I believe. had a write up that was pretty good somewhere around here...

Both answers said what I was going to say.

I started with a Thunder series which already had spring loaded seats. When it came time to rebuild the kit had standard seats. I ran them but wasn't happy with the performance.

I bought new seats, and new floats and I'm back in action. I also did the NorCal_Chris modification and was pleased with the results.

Remove and replace with fuel injection.

Only mod I can think of off the top of my head

I really dislike those carbs. They can be made to work and probably for your rig will be fine but start getting even just slightly more extreme and they show their weakeness

The new style truck avengers seem to work pretty well too.

But as for me I would stick a quadrejet on there

Might need a fuel pressure regulator. We did the off road needles and seats and all that jazz on one plus the foam, never really helped until we regulated it down to like 3 psi off road and it worked way better after that

Thanks guys, I'll look for chris's write up.

eventually that is the plan. I'll be doing a 6.0 or 8.1 before too long but no sense in not getting the most out of what I've got for now.

hmmm, I'm using a mechanical fuel pump atm, never thought I'd need a regulator with that. couldn't hurt though...

hmm, propane conversion??:whistle::D

Ive always had good luck with edelbrocks running on flat ground but hated them when it came to anything off camber so I always stuck with a q-jet. Ive heard good things about the spring loaded needle and seats but never tried them. Fuel pressure regulator is a good idea as well and so is the foam. I know that on a q-jet the foam floats work way better than the brass.

The best fix is a big hammer, then a qjet or tbi. I love my lpg. My local chassis dyno has a pile of edelbrocks because they alway bolt on a holley after they tune the edelbrock to the best power and ALWAYS gain 10+ hp.

Guys, he said he wants EFI at some point, but to just make his edelbrock work for now.

The offroad needles are like $10, couple floats, and some gaskets and he will have a perfectly fine carb that works on the cheap, to get him by.

linking norcal_chris's mod now that I found the post:

hopefully that makes a difference. Gonna start rebuilding the carb this weekend I think. Other than installing the rebuild kit I plan on the following to improve offroad manners:
1. springs on the needle valves. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/edl-1465
2. plug the crossover between the bowls to keep them from flooding each other.
3. Chris's vent tube mod.
4. lower the floats.

If anyone has any more suggestions I'm all ears. :ears:

Check to see if the floats actually float well.

I've heard they can leak after a while and not work as well

IIRC

With standard seats set the floats to 7/16"

With spring loaded seats set the float to 5/8" and don't compress the springs in the seats when measuring.

I did the NorCal_Chris mod too. It works good.

Remember to hook the brake booster vac line back up after you put it on . I may have forgot and took my carb apart ten plus times trying to figure out what the eff I did wrong :haha:
