how to rebuild an edelbrock to handle steeper angles?

I'm finally getting around to doing this rebuild but I'm having trouble finding what a good measurement for the floats should be. The edelbrock manual says 7/16".

For better performance at angle I want the bowls to have less fuel in them, correct? So I should want that number to be bigger, yeah? Say 1/2" or 9/16"?

If I understand what I'm measuring correctly, that is the measurement from the top of the float to the top of the bowl so a greater distance means fuel is cut off sooner, right?

Set float level at 5/8inch
Set float drop at 1 1/4 inches

I measured from bowl to outside of float

Thanks. I have it already put together at this point though. If I run into problems I'll try your measurements.

I set the float level at 1/2" and I measured it by sticking a 1/2" drill bit between the float and the air horn. So far it seems to be working.

I took it out to a quarry and parked it on as steep an angle as I could find and it didn't flood. :thumb: At least that problem seems to be solved.

I still have a problem with it stumbling badly at WOT occasionally but that won't keep me from wheelin' at least. :D

Like when mashing the pedal or held wot.
when held, but not always. It seems to depend on rpms too. Like mashing down the pedal and trying to accelerate hard in 3rd gear. It acts like it is bogging down. If I let off the pedal everything returns to normal, but if I keep it to the floor I can actually kill the engine.

after driving around for awhile today I think the problem might be the carb starving for gas.

I was cruising down the highway about 70mph (1/2 throttle or so) and it started stumbling hard like I was running out of gas. Once I got off the gas for a bit it was fine though.

I did have this problem before I rebuilt the carb but not nearly this bad. I'm thinking (pure guess) that maybe my mechanical fuel pump is wearing out and having trouble keeping up. The problem is more pronounced now because I've set the floats to have less fuel in the bowls so I have less time on the throttle before running them out of fuel.

Sound plausible? :dunno:

Do you have a return line?

Mine didn't and after I put the new motor in and headers... It started vapor locking. I wrapped all the fuel lines and it still did it.

Ran a fuel filter with a return out of the side of it, and zero vapor lock.

It would do same thing. You would hit it and it would act like it was getting no fuel. But driving around easy it was fine.

hmmm, no return line. That does describe what is happening... I hope that isn't it.

It happened to me too.

First make sure that when you pull the throttle back you are actually getting WOT.
I had to adjust the rod linkage to the secondary so the throttle would open all the way.

Another thing you can do is adjust the pump linkage. There are 3 holes there. I'm guessing you are in the center. You can pull the pin and set the pump rod to another position so it opens faster.

I assume you used a vacuume gauge to set the gas/air.
Do you have a fuel pressure gauge?

If u wanna know if its vapor locking. Run a clear fuel filter up by the carb. After its warmed up, check to see if its bubbling and surging into the filter.

I tried 3 fuel pumps and heat shields and everything. Return line was the only thing that solved it.

Check your vacium advance. I've seen several vehicles over the years where they have been disconnected or malfunctioning.
