I took a length of small diameter PVC pipe (longer than the long side tube) and duct taped it to the end of my shop vac's hose. That way I could scrape the insides of the axle tubes with the end of the pipe while the shop vac sucked all the gunk up, worked like a charm!!!
I've also heard of people welding a small half moon of metal to the end of a piece of rod, inserting it into the axle tube, firmly pressing the edge of the half moon to the inside of the tube and pulling the rod out, scraping the gunk out. Never tried that though.
In my K5's front Dana 60, I kept getting mud in the tubes so I got Mad4wd outer axle seals. I cannot attest to how well they worked though since I sold that rig.
Edit: Well, reading more I see both cleaning techniques I suggested have already been said! I guess I should pay more attention, DOH!!!!
LOL!
