How to remove trim, molding, and glass on a Suburban? Prepping for paint.

that sh*t adds up.. I'm dreading swapping my new trimmed out front doors on the Mutt, they need just about EVERYTHING.. including window motors, felt's, etc...

Your telling me! Just for the front and rear felt kits and window chanels im up to $370 or something. I decided my door seals are good but i also decided that every seal associated with the barn doors are poo poo. So i need to add all that in too...

The felts, rubber, trim are going to end up being the most expensive part for me as a whole....
I won't be surprised if all of it together is around $1,400

And I broke my windshield taking it out too....

The seal that kills me is that little flat one that goes around the tailgate....they want $50 for it

I think there is one or two on the barn doors that i have that are like that too. Seems simple looking seals that cost one million dollars. And yea, i have gone through LMC and put together a wish list and it was something like 3k.... But that was for everything i could think of that i wanted/needed. Anyway, i'll be sure and post up what all that ends up costing me too.

Well, I don't know your comfort level, or skill, but I have seen lots harder things than this done on this forum.
So, here goes.

http://www.amazon.com/Small-Metal-Rubber-Parts-Edition/dp/0830604146/

I bought this book back when it was new, and repaired several things that could no longer be bought.
Pretty sure that there are better books now, and probably better stuff than the old Devcon Flexane.

Do a search on casting rubber parts and see what is out there.

If you can find a decent gasket to make a mold of, you should be able to cast your own. Make a mold out of something soft enough, and you can "adjust" it with an exacto knife to make the part closer to what you need.

And, don't rule out repairing what you have with some of the two part compounds.

Or, if you have a gasket that is squished between two doors, and has shrunk too much, you can coat the other door with silicone release agent, mold a bunch of soft silicone rubber on the old part, and gently close the door.

After it hardens, ease the doors open, remove the part, trim up the excess stuff and use it to make a mold to cast a new part.

Get a decent mold made, you can run off as many gaskets as you want and spread the love among others.

With kind of money numbers you are throwing around, its worth a try.

Jay, (it is Jay right?) Thanks for the idea! But this for me is definitely a case where i have more money than time... It will be more feasible for me to just drop some coin and be done with it. Good to know about for the future though! I could see it coming in very handy.

Yep, that is what I often answer to......
Just sounded like you were looking at more expense than you wanted. I agree that if you got the coin, its the way to go.

I have done some various types of casting over the years, and it was always either to save a bunch of money, or because the parts were no longer available.

I just got through casting 10 pounds of 3 oz egg sinkers. I can buy lead on E-bay for about $1.00 per pound, delivered. I can cast slightly more than 5 sinkers per pound, and have to pay over a dollar per sinker at the tackle shop.

$1 to 1.50 per sinker vs .20 each, is a no brainer.

I ran across these videos on making a mold and then casting a tail light lens with it. I can see how the degassing would be important in something clear like that, but I doubt it would be necessary for a rubber gasket.

Its pretty interesting if you want to check it out. The second video is linked at the bottom of the page.

Well i ended up not being able to trim Oye fender last night had left it outside while I was a work then a thunder storm rolled through and rained all over it. So, I'm headed out to paint it now. Should dry fast enough for me to still try to get it installed.

On a side note, I'm just about tired of my phone correcting "the" to "oye"! Wtf? They arent even close! O and t have 3 keys between them! Bagh! Stupid "smart" phone...

Well that was quick (that's what she said).

did you at least wash the dirt off? ;)

he!!, the used one was practically the same color..

It's really just a funky picture. I actually sctochbrighted the whole thing and then washed it with soap and water yesterday. Today I just gave it wipe down.

Seems that i have hit the hard part of the project... Scraping the glued on door seals off the barn doors without scraping off all the paint with it. Gotta get it all done with only an hour or two tomorrow morning, Monday morning, and an hour or two Tuesday morning. Then one way or another, It's getting driven down there! Fast approaching!

if you can protect the paint, a propane torch might just burn it off...I did that to my old seam sealer :dunno:

Welp. She's pretty well good to go and im pretty much nervous as hell about dropping my baby off for cosmetic surgery!

I am seriously so nervous right now. Put a little whiskey in my coffee this morning to try to calm down. I don't know if It's working. I need a smoke! It's interesting tho that I "dont care" how it turns out, and yet, I'm still so apprehensive about it. I guess It's just like i said before, with having no kids, this thing is my baby. And i have to put my baby in the hands of someone else for at least a week, and not only that, I have to nurture it back to health upon return! I feel like i will be a little more at ease once It's actually dropped off but right now the unknown has my nerves shot... Speaking of shot, where did i set my coffee?

We have a few things we think of as family around here too...

Till somebody offers the right amount of cash for them. Doesn't everybody has to sacrifice for the family sometimes?

Love my '05 duramax (that will be up for sale in the near future), cause I love my '90 K3500 more. But I would sell it to do a restro on the '79 which momma loves the most and since I love her more than just about anything else...
