What is the best way to go about replacing a wrist pin?
I have no idea where to start.

Do you have the engine apart?

nope. But I will soon. I figured I would post a thread before I dig in. That way I know what needs to be done before I start.

question one. Should I start from the top or bottom? I figured I would pull the oil pan and pull the pistons out the bottom.

dont bother .

thats a full tear down and reman job.

faster and cheeper to find good used or fresh reman with WARRENTY motor and drop it in.

it's a zz4 crate motor. I'm not about to just get rid of it find another.

o.k.

why wrist pin's ?

who told you this ?

what makes you think its them ?

lot of work for wrong info.

better ask nice for scott's info 4x4high

bottom end knock.

Several people.
one heard and said wrist pins the second he heard it.
others have recommended it.

Couldn't hurt. It's getting overhauled if I do pull it apart.

Very rare for a wrist pin problem. Are you 200% sure you aren't hearing detonation? When does this knock occur? Does it "knock" while idling or do you hear it when you're driving and maybe accellerating?

Also, the pistons WILL NOT come out the bottom of the engine.

Actuallyyyy it could possibly be a cracked flex plate.
I had my buddy Wayne (texasSilhouette) listen and that's what he said to check so I'm going to pull the dust shield thing and check for cracks. With less than 10k miles on the motor I was really hoping it wasn't a wrist pin.

I mostly hear it at idle, when it is revving down and when I'm next to another vehicle.

And what causes detonation?

X2 pistons won't come out the bottom.
Can you hear this nois at idle. Usually if it's in the lower end of the engine you will be able to hear it make a double knock type noise it's hard to explain. Also I have had good luck with killing one cyclinder at a time and the noise will go away when you find the problem cyclinder if it's a lower end noise.

The ZZ4 is a 1 piece rear main I believe, those flexplates like to crack, but when mine cracked it was only a horrible crunch when put in gear, or from D to R.

Also I just remebered when I worked at gm they had a string of problems with enginge casting at the dowel pin area where the hole would be oval instead of round and after time the engine torqueing would crack the flex plate. I actually replace a engine for this problem after it cracked three flywheels.

This is all good news! I don't mind changing a flexplate out. That's something I can knock out in an hour or two.

And I'll try killing a cylinder at a time. Just pull the plugs on the distributor?

Oh and it did occur to me that the knock comes from the bottom rear of the motor.

Check to make sure you don't have more than .010" endplay in the crank. Push/pull the crank in the engine with a pry bar and if it moves excessively then you have a bad thrust bearing (which will cause a knocking noise).

Wrist pins can wear out and make a noise. But it is so uncommon that they are WAY down on the list of things to think about when you hear a noise.

If its doing it at idle and when you back off the gas, its unlikely to be detonation. There are a couple of tricks you can do to check, but I would consider it unlikely under those circumstances.
And if it was detonation, doing it under those conditions, it ought to get LOUD when you accelerate. Especially if you slightly bog the engine.

If those 10k are since new or last rebuild, the only way a wrist pin would be bad if it were the wrong pin, defective when new, or damaged during installation.
