I hope i dont sound to rookie asking this but how can you tell a D44 from a D60 just by glancing at it. I have only seen D60front's in pics and they look very similar to my D44front. Thanks guys!:D

D60 will have a 60F cast into the lower webbing of the center section facing the front. GM models have kingpins, not ball joints.

Hey it's ok to ask, if ya don't know, ya don't know. Thats where CK5 come in. Read up and enjoy, Welcome by the way too. :waytogo:

When in doubt about all of the other clues, look at the pumpkin. It will either be cast 44 or 60. Lots of people trying to unload big hub 44's as 60's.

Chevy Dana 60 knuckles have 4 bolts top and bottom, Dana 44s are 2" round. Dana 60s have 3 u-bolts, Dana 44s have 4.

only one ubolt on the pumpkin

That is how I tell at a glance...

Where the spring on the passenger side mounts to the axle, there will only be one u-bolt... On the closest side of the spring to the diff there will be no u-bolt...

And yes, there are 4 bolts holding the knuckle on, not a ball joint...

I've seen a d60 that didn't have the 60 stamp... Not sure if it was ground off sometime during it's life or what, but it wasn't there...

i dunno, i picked up later model or something Dana 44 from a Dodge i believe it was, that only had the studs for one u-bolt on the passenger side.

Weird thing about it was it had a long side axleshaft you could dissengage from some vacuum sorta thingy monuted to it.
wasn't sure what that was, but i saw tha single u-joint and thought maybe a d-60, got it for free, sucked to fine out it wasn't aything special.

I had a 3/4 ton Dodge truck like that. The vacuum motor on top of the axle (driver's side I believe) is to engage the front wheel drive. It never worked like it was supposed to.

As mentioned above Dodge D44's only have one u-bolt on the passenger side and use studs just like a Chevy D60.

what years were this?

the on u-bolt is what i go buy on a chevy truck. but this is good info to keep in mind just to be safe

Not sure but it is a good thing to watch for. It's not too farfetched for someone to put a Dodge D44 where a D60 used to be.

Dont go by this. Dodge d44s have studs too.

Wow I got beat to that bad...

The only 60 front that has 4 ubolts is the ford drivers side drops as far as I know.

for a quick glance it would do. i could look at it and think yea its got a 60 possibly. now if i was wanting to buy it then thats a different story. i would look for the 60 cast into it.
