oright here i am greenhorn @ work ... just wanna know if the part that holds my pittman arm can be changed ... the steering box on top is the one i just took off my blazer ...the one on the bottom came off a 2wd pickup i had in the backyard ... the only problem is the way the linkage hooks up at the bottom is a differnt size ...can i swap these or what ... i already tried on the greasy one by taking off those four bolts on the top of the steering box but i had no luck ... i know it can probably be done i just need some 101...anyone thnks

If the 2 boxes use the same type of hose fittings the easiest route would be to simply install the 2wd box - fyi they have the same bolt pattern. What years are the boxes? The shaft coming out of the box is a "pitman arm shaft", with the arm being the "pitman arm" itself. You can swap the shafts between the boxes but if the hose styles are the same go the K.I.S.S. way and install the whole thing. :wink1:

every things the same except the size of the pittman arm shaft ... its a lil bigger on the 4wd one .. as for the years ... the bottom one s off a 85 p/u and the blazer is a 76

If you swap to a 2wd steering box I believe you have to go crossover steering unless you swap the sector shafts. Oh yeah by the way nice printer or whatever the hell it is! WTF is that doin' in the garage! LMAO

thats the kids printer out there ... but waht do i gotta do to swap shafts ... i already tried to take one out but ended up breakin the little allen wrench nut on top thinking it was holding it... took the four bolts off and that cap just spun and spun but never came off?

With the year difference between the two I'm not sure the hose fittings might be different but... You should be able to use the 2wd box in place of the 4wd box. The pitman arm on the 2wd box is splined, therefore you can just remove the pitman arm and clock it to whatever position you want. John or anyone else please correct me if I'm way off here.

First, I wouldn't mees wtih swapping the sector shafts, imo. I used a Cherokee arm on my 2wd box, but I have cross over. Should be able to turn the arm 90 deg to where you want it, like the smartass says.

Again, watch the hose fittings, some are o-ring, others are flared. Make sue the wheel, and the tires are all centered before you go bolting stuff together and it only turns one way

alright guys i got a better pic to show you guys why i wanna swap shafts... actually i dont wanna swap shafts, i'd like to make the steering box on the right work just how it is ... my pittman arm fits good and everything except for the way it gets tightened . on my original pittman shaft there is a lil notch for the bolt to go through there and clamp it tight . but on the steering box i took off my 2wd p/u there is no notch ... just some big nut to tighten the pittman arm to .
So what i'm thinking of doing is making my own notch with a grinder ... but how do i find the right spot to make the notch ... any ideas would be cool ... if i could i'd just go buy a new one but .... you know how it goes

the donor box being from the 80's, your power steering fittings will not bolt up to the other box, although you can just as easily move over the power steering lines, and pump into the older truck. (you can also just get new 80's lines, and move the fitting from the back of the 80's pump into the 70's pump, so your power steering system can use all the o-ring style hoses)

ANYWAYS... here's the info you need on swapping shafts:

HOLD IT!!!

Why are you swapping boxes? Are you changing from push / pull to crossover steering? "Yes" is the only reason to be using the 2wd box or shaft. All the major crossover kits use a pitman arm that is splined all the way around requiring the large nut on the bottom just like the orignal 2wd set up, there is no need for the nothed / pinch bolt set up.

As far as the retention method for each arm DO NOT improvise and grind a notch into the 2wd shaft!

oright im back ... well i got the shafts swapped thanks to that link ... i was having problems getting the first shaft out because it wasnt centered ... all i had to do was turn the steering wheel side until the shaft cleared so looks good so far
And yeah the power steerin fittings where different so i guess ill get those off the parts truck

As for why im changing the steering box in the first place is because my steering is good if im moving or my wheels moving i should say... as soon as i come to a stop and try and turn left something happens with my steering and i just go straight ... this is a problem ive had for a while it just has gotten so bad it time to put new or better parts at least ... thats why im swapping the steering boxes because the original on the blazer was leaking fluid ...dont know from where and the steering box on the parts truck was looking in better shape ... at least not all leaking ... i dont even know if thats part of my steering problem im just guessing because it was all leaking .so im gonna change whatever else is looking like it needs to be replaced
As for crossover steering ... im not clear on that yet ... i was wondering if i take all the steering parts off the 2wd pickup i hve for parts , would that be a crossover setup ? and what do i need if i wanted to go look for a crossover setup ?
