When i drive and use the gas and some times coasting i hear a howling or a whooing higher pitched sound coming from whay sounds like my rear driver side tire area, what would be causing this, if you have any ideas let me know>? thanks guys

corey

Whats that and wheres that? And is it hard to replace and fix. thanks

where in the rear end, and is there some kind of bearings at the ends of the axles by the wheels bec i swear it sounds like it is one the drivers side but im not sure???

the fill plug on the diff should be on the pass side of the housing, it should be a 1/2in socket fitting. pressure wash away and youll find it:waytogo:

about the grinding, my guess is the wheel bearings in the rear axle.

haha, i was not talking about the fill plug when I said "where" i was asking where the bearings are located in the rear end, and is there more than one bearing? but i like how you referenced the power washer. lol that was a good one.

is the wheel bearing a easy fix and can i do that myslef with not many tools because I am away from my home at the time so i do not have the luxery of a tool filled garage.

all youd really need is a crowbar to pull the old bearing out and a heavy rubber mallet to put the new one in. thats how i replaced my wheel bearings. youll also have to pull the diff cover off to get at the c-clips that hold the axleshaft in place. its really a pain in the butt.

btw, nice sig line:waytogo:

oh... i see, the bearing are at the hub, one per side

There are bearings at the hub right bec the howling seems to becoming from the side.

yup, right behind the wheel studs. the way it was designed you have to pull the diff cover off and pull the spider gear pinion and have a buddy push on the shaft and you pull the c-clip off, then itll all slide out. i did this fix somewhere in alaska on my friends s10 blazer near sunset. a moose investigated the whole process for a while. good times.

How can i tell if it is the bearing in the differential(carrier bearing i think its called) of tell if its a wheel bearing? And to change the "wheel bearing" I have to remove the spider and pinion gears, i was a tad confused?

the axle is a semi-floating design and there is a little c-clip in the diff that holds the axle on. i wish i had pics to show you but i dont. some axles, like those found on jeeps, have a way to mount the axle to the outer hub, but not gm. heres a quick sketch to show what im saying. hope it helps

how can i tell which bearing is the one thats gone bad if there is one if the diff and one behaind the rotor?

I searched on the internet for how to tell if your carrier bearing is going bad and this is what i found and exactly pretty much wht I am feeling.

"You will get vibration when slowing down with you foot off the pedal or coasting if the carrier bearing is going bad, while accelerating it won't vibrate since there is a load on it. I had mine go bad on me and I asked the service manager a million questions about how and why and it killed some time on our test ride. I had quite a bit of play in mine too and he said that they all have a little play in them after using the truck and it's hard to tell that way but the vibration never lies."---random person i dont know.

So i think that is it, SO would you say its hard to replace myslf, i have never done any work in the diff, myself.

I think you are refering to the pinion bearing. A carier bearing is in the middle of a long driveshaft. Like, big four door trucks and one tons. The pinion bearing is on the output of your diff. More or less right behind where your u-joint bolts on.
