pics are fuzzy but you can see somewhat.

to me the coast side is way off, but how can the drive side be close and the coast be way off? these are used gears, all i did was change the bearings on hte pinion and carrier, but somehow lost the pass side of the carrier shim. /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Is it impossible to get clearer pics? From the looks of it, it is screaming pinion too shallow to me.

ill go see what i can do, it might take a while, i can't upload to my comp and yahoo email takes too long

i used the factory shims except for the pass side carrier.

I would say the drive pattern is acceptable, but something needs to be done about that coast pattern to get it closer to the heel of the gear.

Since I'm having such a hard time seeing it, take a look at the patterns here:
http://www.ring-pinion.com/tech/yukoninst.pdf

I can't see much of anything on that coast side, but if what I think I'm seeing is correct you're going to have to do some adjusting.

you can see it on the inside 1/4 of the gear, the dark spots. how do i move the coast pattern without changing the drive too much? /forums/images/graemlins/1zhelp.gif

You can't. But there is more than one acceptable drive pattern.

It looks like you're going to have to do some modification of the pinion depth to achieve the proper pattern. I keep wanting to say that you need to move the pinion closer to the ring gear. I could be wrong though.

What is the minimum backlash allowed for that axle? It's possible you might be able to move the ring gear slightly closer to the pinion that way and get the pattern to move just enough to make it acceptable.

Whatver you do, I wouldn't run it as it is now.

how exactly do i measure backlash? i though it was what the carrier moved left to right, but after reading the link, it sounds like its the rotational movement from drive to coast or vise versa. if im wrong, and i think i am, it may solve all the problems /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

im not sure on the minimume, iread a article on a camaro that had a 7.65 axle (same as this) and richmond recomends .008". i can't find anything for this axle, i only have the haynes manual, and it only tells me how to remove the axle /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif no torque specs or any specs whatsoever. /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif

Backlash is measured by the amount you can move the ring gear (rock it back and forth) between where the pinion hits the ring gear either direction.

i think i got it figured out, i had .0005 backlash. i swap what side the shims were on (left on right and right on left) and the back lash is now .008 and the pattern looks alot better on both sides. ill get pics as soon as the batteries charge up. /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

/forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif whats the backlash on the rotation of the ring gear?
