some play in my driver side tire. with tire in the air and hands at 12 and 6, there is a pretty good amount of play in the tire. how do i tell if its a bad hub or worn kingpin? or both?

While moving the tire up & down, watch for play between the knuckle and housing (top &/or bottom). Since the kp has a spring it will move but when they're healthy it should take a pry bar to do it. If you can move it by hand my bet is it's in the bearings.

also, how effective is the "washer fix" just as a band-aid until I can fully rebuild the kingpins? Just a few thick fender washers on top of the spring, correct?

I wouldn't call it a band-aid fix. Even with new springs in my D60 I still need a washer per side (the old original springs required 2 washers per side) to avoid the death wobble. These trucks were designed around short and skinny factory tires and not tall and wide heavy mud tires.

well, lets start with the kingpins i say.
ill bring some washers with me,
is the "play" on both sides?
good thing is it wont be the 1st time yer steering arm has been removed, so hopefully stud pullers wont enter the equation:whistle:

if it aint yer k-pins, then we start a teardown and inspect bearings etc..
here ya go for familiararity..(is that even a word??)

alright. you talked me into it. short stack o' washers in my 60's near future. is there any way to tell how many washers i can use, or is it a matter of "if you can stomp the cap back on, you're good"?

general rule of rhumb is 1 or 2, if 3 can fit then the spring is shot and should be replaced anyways.
my guess is when ya take the cab off the bushing is going to be a cracked and crumbled mess of plastic, and since the kits are so cheap...dunno
