Human Driving Association...

I hope I'm dead before the "future" comes to fruition,if this is what the world will be like soon...
In ways I feel we were better off in the 70's and before ,when we had no computers, cell phones, computerized vehicles,etc..they are pushing the technology too far too fast, many folks ,especially my age, cant comprehend how to use a lot of newer things like TV's,PC.s,and it has reduced their quality of life in many ways ,it'll only get worse if this continues..

And...
I don't plan to fly again,I do not like trusting my life to microchips when there is no breakdown lane up 5 miles high in the sky..
I'd rather die in a car accident than fall from 30,000 ft thank you..
The three times I flew,I had bad experiences, and my heart today wouldn't be able to stand another terrifying flight thru turbulence or a thunderstorm..

I'm not even at ease trusting a vehicle like I once used too--today's vehicles are just about space ships IMO,with all the computerized controls of the engine, transmission, and a few hundred electrical parts.

The worst thing about knowing what makes a vehicle run,and how many parts must work in perfect harmony to just be able to drive it,makes one uneasy, knowing if any of those thousands of mechanical & electrical parts decided to take a dump, you can be killed or injured,or at least not get to your destination on time as planned..

When Onstar first came out I told my buds I would never have it. When asked why I told them it gives away control of the vehicle. If the gubbmint wants you they know where you are at all times. They can shut you down remotely. They feature that as a selling point in their latest commercial.

+1 on Red Barchetta. I hoped I wouldn't be alive when it happened, but it has begun. I got rid of my 99 because I had to step on the brake to shift it, and the goddam door locks locked automatically, but wouldn't unlock. I'd go to jump out but the door would be locked.

And my cell stays at home with the location tracker off. Hell, the phone is usually off. My wife needs a new phone, I'll give her mine and get me a flip phone. Fork big brother and his automated minions....not to mention the censorship by social media, google, yt, Instagram, etc etc etc

I will never have an Alexa in my home.

In case you didn't know, your cell phones are already recording majority of your stuff. A few years ago I paid NSA for recordings of my phone calls. It took six months and a warrant, but they had everything that I asked for.

Alexa is great

You can turn the location tracker off. You can ditch the smartphone and buy a flip phone. They still know where you are through cell tower triangulation. If the police wants to find you, they just make a call to your cell provider and they've got your coordinates in 2 minutes

As car guys we like the sound of an engine, shifting gears, burnouts, downshifting through a tunnel, etc, etc. The list goes on and on.
Remember we are a minority that enjoy our cars, trucks, etc. Whether it's a off road machine, fast car, or show car, classic, etc.
The mass population is not like us. They see cars as a means to get from point A to point B and nothing more.
I actually doubt this is coming as fast as they say, but what do I know. My favorite vehicle in my collection is 52 years old now.

I agree with your first two paragraphs, but I disagree where you say that change is not coming soon. The art of driving Is a thing of the past. there is no more slamming of Gears through tunnels. Car enthusiasts are incredibly divided as far as I can tell, you got the bozos with Dodge Chargers on big Chinese rims, and then you've got people with Tesla's who refuse to drive fast

See my quote here:
I was watching something awhile back and it talked about self driving cars/ electric cars etc, and the sales numbers for electric cars are only high when there's a good incentive to buy it. I.E. government rebate, etc. Basically proving unless it's cheap people won't go for it. I see the same same future for self-driving cars.

This is what I meant. Plus I kinda think more of the public will not like it. I think that since it's not here right now it doesn't matter, but once it's here there will be a bigger revolt from the public. I believe the people behind these self driving companys are seriously misjudging the public.
Also, I think the government might step In with some law, whether we like it or not.

But, as I noted before. What do I know?, I like old stuff. I don't have Facebook- social media, and me and my wife still sit down at the dinner table to eat together, and I think Sunday is for a day of God. Amongst my other "old fashioned" ideologies, I'm generally not in line with today's society.

1967 737 = Works/worked well.

2019 737 "max" = SHIT

i'm not actually opposed to automation, i just don't think it can work with heavy machinery. i include cars as heavy machinery for the purposes of this discussion.
Visit a Boeing factory and you will see autonomous machines driving around and assembling 777 fuselage to tail and wings. It had been working for years in a controlled environment.

Visit an Amazon warehouse and you will find robots driving around autonomously picking up and delivering products to the packaging area. Again, working for years in a controlled environment.

Self driving cars on the road are trying to take that technology out into the uncontrolled environment of the real world. The more drivers replaced with autonomous vehicles, the faster the environment is going to be controlled. It's sorta like herd immunity, it works best with everyone participating. I could see it staring with big cities banning personal cars to improve traffic.

That said, I will never give up my old trucks or motorcycles. I purposely take the backroads that take 30 extra minutes to work to avoid traffic.
