Human Driving Association...

Rant on....

I dislike LS engines.
I will never have an Alexa in my home.
I will never believe driverless cars will be safe.

As the general public continues to accept new technology shoved down our throats "for the better good," we play right into the hands of big business and government that continue to strip away our privacy and our rights. Wake up people.

Rant off.

And when the government decides you dont get to move around any longer, they put perimeter restrictions on the car. Or just shut it off.

My grand kids, now grown up, are looking toward the day when nobody will have to buy a car . They tell me that one day you will simply log onto a phone app and order a car to pick you up, drop you off and pick you up later.

They think it will be great! No car payments, insurance, maintenance, etc. They don't get that they are giving up their freedom to control their own lives and giving it to the government or big business (Big Brother!) They think I'm paranoid when I ask them what they will do when the government decides when and where they can travel or decides to shut down travel all together.

What's the world coming to when people don't even cherish their own personal freedom? Even a lot of kids nowadays don't even get excited to get their driver's license. Something my generation couldn't wait to get. Guess it goes along with not wanting to move away from Mommy and Daddy!

Good part is I believe it will be extremely hard to do away with gas stations, etc. as long as there are older vehicles, tractors and lawn mowers, all which I'm sure someone right now are planning (how) to ban.

Sorry state of affairs in my opinion!

Forgive my long rant but I'll say it before the internet gets further regulated or freedom of speech is terminated!

The entire reason I refuse to fly, regardless of statistics, is that they are controlled by a machine. The pilot is only there for a few operations and emergencies. F**k that! I've made a pretty good living fixing the types of systems that run them when they break.

Now they want to do the same to cars. Except in an emergency you CANT take control...... :doah:

Lots of humans are stupid for sure. Plenty don't need their licence at all. But I'll take my chances with them before millions of wirelessly controlled, wheeled computers.

A large part of the reason I now DD an '85 instead of the 2015 I had is because of all the controls that wouldn't let me do stuff I wanted to.

We were just discussing this the other day. I think a lot of it is computers and phones. There are numerous ways to make contact with someone where as when I was in high school the best way to contact someone was to drive to where ever they were.

As car guys we like the sound of an engine, shifting gears, burnouts, downshifting through a tunnel, etc, etc. The list goes on and on.
Remember we are a minority that enjoy our cars, trucks, etc. Whether it's a off road machine, fast car, or show car, classic, etc.
The mass population is not like us. They see cars as a means to get from point A to point B and nothing more.
I actually doubt this is coming as fast as they say, but what do I know. My favorite vehicle in my collection is 52 years old now.

i'm not actually opposed to automation, i just don't think it can work with heavy machinery. i include cars as heavy machinery for the purposes of this discussion.

The problem I see for us car lovers is the only way self driving cars can really work on a large scale is if all cars on the road are self driving. Otherwise us old car drivers could take advantage of the self driving cars. They will have to have safeties built in and that means cars with human drivers can bully them. Self driving cars would never get anywhere in traffic. Just cut them off and they will stop automatically. So if governments want to get serious about self driving cars, they are going to have to mandate them. I can see this happening first in the large cities and slowly expanding out from there.

Plus I think in order to flow well in traffic the self-driving cars would need to be able to communicate with the other cars around them so they can work in concert.

I've also heard that congestion on the streets in large cities is getting worse because of being able to summon a ride when needed with apps like Uber and Lyft. People that would have figured out a way to ride a bus or the subway are just calling for a car instead. Self-driving cars won't improve that situation either.

I was watching something awhile back and it talked about self driving cars/ electric cars etc, and the sales numbers for electric cars are only high when there's a good incentive to buy it. I.E. government rebate, etc. Basically proving unless it's cheap people won't go for it. I see the same same future for self-driving cars.

Also let's talk about trucks. Trucks are the hottest segment in the market, yet the idea of a self-driving truck just does make sense due to hauling, towing, plowing, etc. Those thing won't work with self driving tech.
Never mind the ability to, round up the cows, or drive your truck in the yard to trim a tree, hauling stuff to the dump.... All the things you actually need to maneuver a truck around to do the chore at hand. None of the self-driving tech will be able to accommodate those type of chores.

These self driving cars are coming, I don't think there is anything that will stop them. I hope that we can still drive what we want when we want, it is a freedom I cherish and would it would be one of those "pry the steering wheel from my cold dead hands" kind of thing.

On the bright side, if you have used any kind of public transportation or facility ,you know what a filthy, disgusting bunch of humans we are, and what those little transportation pods will be looking like after a few thousand of the laziest, most self entitled, soy swilling, unwashed sniffling slackers have enjoyed their ride.

Can't agree with this enough.

I have no "real" proof, but my wife and I have seen it time and time again on our smart phones...they listen.

We have had conversations with each other
( not on the phone - but the phone sitting nearby) about a purchasing a new car or something like that,,and then within a few hours we start to get bombarded with advertising for that exact product on our cell phones. It's happened too many times to be a coincidence... Both of us are very careful to do no online search prior to our conversation, and have done it several times about a product or service we have absolutely no interest in,,and we get ads for that product. So we know Google listens...

We even suspect that some of the ads on cable are geared towards things we talk about, and are way to close to be just coincidence... which is why I will never have an Alexa... I have family and friends that own them and swear it listens to conversations in the home.
Home automation, locks on doors, doorbells with cameras, cameras in the home for security systems... keep all that sh*t.
I've seen too many ways systems can be hacked for me to ever want to be that connected. ..
Hell, the amount of information you are tracked on, on a daily basis is huge. You can't
even go to the grocery store without them keeping track of what products you buy.
they track where you drive on your cell phone, they can tell when you go out for dinner, where you ate, how long you were there etc... our privacy is no longer private.
and it's getting worse everyday...

They have even planted a few planes
lately due to disoriented pilots when something goes wrong in the cockpit.
The technology is so advanced that the pilot either does nothing expecting the software to correct the situation or overreacts because he or she can't understand what the computer is doing and makes the situation worse...

This is what I see happening with cars in the future.. technology advancing to a point where a livable situation becomes deadly due to a technology breakdown.

My daughter teaches 1st-2nd grade and she says after teaching for almost 20 years she's noticed the kids no longer know how to interact with each other in person. They are so used to communicating through a media devices they have no skills interacting face to face. Also, they are rude and even think it's okay to cuss the teachers. That comes from parents not interacting with and disciplining their children. She used to enjoy teaching the kids but now can barely stand it. She said when the teachers call the parents about the child's cussing and fighting (to be left alone by the other children) they come in furious that anyone would accuse their child of doing anything wrong.
Although this appears unrelated to driving, these are the future adults who will only be concerned with themselves and won't care about anyone else including others rights and individual liberties, including peoples right to be free from government over-reach into such things as being able to control their own destiny and destination, i.e., driving their own vehicles. Quite a stretch to some but I see trouble coming.

Want another indisputable example of this? My friend and his wife visited the USAF Museum in Dayton, OH. As they were leaving they stopped at the gift shop. He found a shot glass made to look like an empty shell casing in anodized blue with the USAF logo. His wife found a mug, again resembling a shell casing though this one was large, red and had a handle. They discussed buying them then decided the price was too high and went home. Their phones were in their pant pockets.

When they returned home my buddy turned on his computer. What popped up? An ad for the exact two items, same colors, logos, exact same things! This time with a slightly lower price. Freaked them out! Can't tell them their cell phones don't listen to what your saying. That's NO coincidence! Too specific!

People laugh at me for still having a flip phone and I'm even leery of that!

Some of you might not like the band Rush but they called this a long time ago. The song is called "Red Barchetta". Read on........

My uncle has a country place
That no one knows about
He says it used to be a farm
Before the Motor Law
And on Sundays I elude the eyes
And hop the Turbine Freight
To far outside the Wire
Where my white-haired uncle waits

Jump to the ground
As the Turbo slows to cross the borderline
Run like the wind
As excitement shivers up and down my spine
Down in his barn
My uncle preserved for me an old machine
For fifty odd years
To keep it as new has been his dearest dream

I strip away the old debris
That hides a shining car
A brilliant red Barchetta
From a better vanished time
I fire up the willing engine
Responding with a roar
Tires spitting gravel
I commit my weekly crime

Wind
In my hair
Shifting and drifting
Mechanical music
Adrenaline surge...

Well-weathered leather
Hot metal and oil
The scented country air
Sunlight on chrome
The blur of the landscape
Every nerve aware

One day, probably not longer after I've finished my sojourn on Earth, a time will come when an entire civilization will never know the joy of stomping on the skinny pedal or pinning the throttle bar or the myriad of ways we're currently able to defy physics via the use of well-tuned horsepower. I actually feel sorry for them- they'll never get the opportunity to experience that raw rush of adrenaline as you're forced to hold on for dear life as the rubber/track/prop comes to life. Despite all the issues we're currently facing around the globe, we may very well be one of the last generations who understands what Rush was talking about.........
