hummer wheel question of the day

Nope. But the sidewall of the tire could get pinched between the runflat and a rock off road. That could rip the tire wide open.
Never seen proof of it happening though.

I'm a total noob on the whole hummer wheels. Is there a thread telling about a break down of the wheel itself and what exactly you get from changing to these??

Sorry to hijack but i've used search and you wouldn't believe how many posts come up for "hummer wheels"

dont have to, but you can air down more if you cut them (center fin would hit the tire when aired down alot)

so what is the added benifit of cutting them down??i can see the tire pinch deal but you would have to have like no air in the tires and it seems if you were to get a flat on trail with 44s and the runflats not cut down it would prevent you from duning your tire trying to get back (ig you didnt have a spare)

is that really gonna be affected with a 44 though...your prolly right it just looks like there would be a huge space between the runflat and the tire...

yea the center fin on them is actually like 8" tall. if you dont air down it wont metter but air down to 2psi and youll see what im talkin bout;). but with 44s it might not be an issue, but id do it anyways because if you are climbing over a rock it would suck for the runflat to cut through the tire or something

there is not really one and its kinda complicated to try to explain over the computer..i had to see a set to actually understand how they work

ok ok let me ask this how would the runflat come through the tire???there are no sharp edges on my mags and the only place i could thing that would tear a hole in the end would be the end which is bolted togher...i could see more damage if you cut them down and you were to get a flat and drive on it

Just cut 'em

.
It's easy.

how did you cut yours??ive heard of a bandsaw but i dont have acess to one...i have heard of using a sawzall but even mine throughs occisonial sparks

Sorry if I'm hi-jacking this in some way.

I used a sawzall with a short (5 inch) metalblade to cut down the runflats.
Replace the blade often because if it's not sharp the heat will melt the magnesium and it can in the worse case catch fire. Otherwise it was quite easy to cut them.

I don't think you really need to cut them down. The runflats are 24 inches in diameter so you have 10 inches on each side for flexing the tire.

I cut mine with a Dewalt Sawzall using a 7" Lennox Bi-Metal blade.
It cut through the runflat like butter.

I really don't know why everyone is so worried about them catching fire. They are a Mag-Al alloy, and will take much more heat than a spark to set them ablaze.
After I cut mine, I used a grinder with a 80G flap disk to smooth them out.

After I was done I did some playing with the scrap and even a propane torch would not set a large piece on fire. If it was a pile of shavings it would though.
MAPP gas would do it all though.

Scary thing about a Mag fire is how do you put it out? That stuff burns underwater - would a regular ABC extingusher put it out?

A little more on topic - If you are cutting that much off the run-flat, why not just toss 'em? Or do you need them to keep the bead on?

I just picked my 12 bolt H1's up tonight...
I asked the guy that same question as i want the PVC inserts, not the MAG ones.

He said "No you dont need a runflat, it just wont be a beadlock. It's just a regular rim at that point"

So no, you dont need a insert of anykind...

I'd get several more opinions before I tried running without a bead lock. Everything I've read says it's questionable.
