Hey guys—I've been on the lookout for a clean M1009 Blazer for about a month now and can't seem to find one that doesn't need serious metal surgery. The top of my budget is about 5-grand, and my only stipulation is that it's rust-free (no previous rot repair and a clean underside.) Does such a thing exist, or should I move on? I'm not opposed to a civy version of the Blazer or Jimmy, but I've got a lot of time under my belt working on this drivetrain configuration (also have an M1028) and I have an M1009 parts rig to help keep it going. Any opinions or direction would be appreciated!

Rust-free.

North-east.

Notice how they're not in the same sentence. :thumb:

Hah! You have a very valid point there, but I've expanded my search outside the N.E. via ebay an Gov. Liquidators . . . still no luck. The one's coming out of Nellis Airforce Base in Nevada seem pretty clean, but I haven't seen 'em come up for auction there in a while.

ok, I'm in no way pushing this guys site or any such thing but this guy http://www.100dollarman.com/trucks.html
Seems to ussually have them in stock. I never went out there but was checking it out before i bought mine. There are plenty of guys out here who I'm sure would be willing to check it out for you, and he may even be able to work with a shipper for you.

Just a thought. Also he is a pirate member.

Thanks! I've seen this guy on pirate with his bobbed deuce, but had forgotten he was in the business of selling MV's. Can anyone reccomend a good source for shipping cross-country? It's been a while, but from what I've heard, vehicle shipping rates have gone up considerably in the past few years.

I just use shipmycar.com, my quotes to ship from socal to central ny are ranging from 1000 to 1600

Also look into Idaho Motor Pool.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS a place in Wisconsin called Alfa Heaven. Liars, cheats, and masters of bondo and CARC paint.

Might be cheaper to fly out and drive it back. That's how I got my '89 K5 home from Seattle.

Thanks for the direction on this. I just pulled the trigger on an '85 M1009 last night, however. It was about 2-1/2 hours away in Maine, but originally came from a military base in Oklahoma, and is 100% rust free (really.) The factory paint on the frame is still predominantly present, and the underside of the floorboards look like 1985 all over again. It's pretty amazing actually. On top of this, the guy was just looking to make his money back after securing it through Gov. Liquidators, and I got it for $3,150. There was a set of M1008 1-ton axles for sale about ten minutes down the road, so I grabbed them too . . . must have been fate. I plan on duplicating the suspension on my M1028, which is a 4-inch front spring, shackle reversal rear, and zero-rates on all four corners. I've got bias 38's on the truck, but I think I'll be going with a 37-40 inch radial on this one. Time to read up on rear fender trimming for Blazer's I guess . . .

Yeah, after looking for a decent one for as long as I have, this thing was a godsend. Now the research begins on the Dana 60/14-bolt install's, and suspension set-up/fender trimming for whatever size tires I finally decide on. I'd like to go with a 39.5 or 40-inch tire, but I'm not sure the 4:56 gears are a good match to the 6.2 diesel in these things for that large of a tire . . . anyone have any opinions there, or perhaps experience with a similar combo?

I had narrow 38's on my M1008. Still felt over geared. Could do 70mph but wasn't happy there. Low geared for putting around and wheeling. Wouldn't be super optimal for super low gear wheeling but did well. I wished I had OD and that was about it. You don't like it...add a turbo or an engine with more hp.

I try to stay out of the swamp for the most part, but a lot of the stuff I wheel requires some wheel-speed to help clear the tread (old skid paths, make-yer-own paths, and moutainous-type stuff.) Did GM change the 6.2 between '84 and '85 (more compression?) Is the newer one a J-code or something like that?

The CUCV's were all J code diesels. Wheel speed never seemed to be an issue.

Honestly I liked it for cruising around town and bumping around in the woods. The gears were still pretty low even with the heavy ass Michelin 38's. It was the high speed driving that it seemed to wheeze a bit on.

Thanks . . . this helps push me a little closer to the 40-inch tires.

Decent, used condition, Banks Sidewinders can be had for ~$300, via eBay....

Turbo + Intercooler + wrench time = FUN!
