well i went wheeling today and quickly realized a locked front end with 35's on rocks will not work. the fluid heats up so hot it will burn you almost. so a cooler is a must. and my steering is completely gone at idle when i am on a rock so hydro is in order also. the ram on the write up i saw kidjethro is that the one most people run and/or what is a good one and where can i get it? what about cooler? i need to find the largest tranny cooler possible? and last question; anyone know how to removed the resevoir from my pump and make it into a remote resevoir to hold more fluid? (I hate how people put radiator hose over it, just looks crappy imo) btw this was my first outing in a year with my new drive train and besides the need for a hand throttle and hydro it worked great.

vautozone sells half-way decent tranny coolers, the bigger ones come with a fan too IIRC...i know how to take the resevoir off but im not sure how to set it up for remote after that....what i did was silocone the cap on and drill and tap a hole in the back of the neck near the top and put a barb fitting on it for a 3/8 hose to a remote resevoir (small coolant overflow also available at vautozone)...works pretty good...i needed it because the resevoir on the pump didnt hold enough fluid for my ram, it would drain it completley......let me know if you need pics....

yes i would love to have pics, i am a complete newb at hydro. i need a 8 inch travel ram correct? anyone got a link to an exact one that will work?

If your tie rod is in the stock location and you are using a D60 in the front, an 8" ram is correct.

I am using the same ram that is described in kidjethro's writeup, it works great.

As for the cooler, find a transmission cooler with ends that simply accept hose (the power steering return line is 3/8" IIRC). Easy, cheap and will keep your steering plenty cool.

Synthetic fluid is a great idea in this application as well.

Here is a factory "boot" that is a Chrysler product and i've installed it on my rig and hooked it to a hydro boost resevoir. The chrysler part number is 4333475. This just clamps onto the neck of your existing resevoir and then you use 3/4" oil hose to a remote resevoir.

So odd I am having the SAME FRIGGIN Problem. I just went to a 44 locked and loaded and cross over. I have all ready replaced the pump with one out of a 1989 one ton 454. Put on bigger Tires 36" Swampers. Ran great for a week. HATE Swampers always have. Put my 35's back on. same old problem Drives fine steers good as long as I am moving. Soon as I stop no steering. I do not want Hydro Steer what can I do. Got any pic's AND lots of help. BB08 is right around the corner.

You guys must have a pump gone bad. I'm running hydro assist and 35's with a stock pump and i have no problems at all.

I have front detroit d60 full hydro no remote reservoir use the tranny cooler in rad as steering cooler and everything works great.
As PS pump I use the one that were on the truck from the beginning.

I have almost the same set up as Oatsk5 and He is having no issues me nothing but issues. Mine is a brand new pump, If I have to buy another one I will be mift... do these, After i didi them, I could steer at idle again

nerraw has a new pump and we did the mods to it. Still craptacular steering. Caused him to get a wee bit of body damage :doah:

I did those mods to my pump because I didn't feel my steering was strong enough. Afterwards, it was ok but steadily declined.

Eventually I decided to have the pump warrantied and put the modified valve setup into the new pump. I immediately blew all the seals out of my steering box because the pump made too much pressure.

I now run a stock, unmodified, rebuilt pump. I run crossover and hydro assist (with a 1.5" ram) and it turns my 42's very well in the rocks.

IMO, a good condition pump is all you will need. My rebuilt pump performs way better than my modified ~5 year old pump did.

i want a 1.5X8X1 cyl right? and what kind of ends is everyone running? i clicked on the link for kidjethros cyl and the link was dead. where is everyone getting there tabs also? I plan on ordering this stuff now so i can start hooking it up.

If you drive it on the street, you want a 1.5" ram. Bigger than that and your steering become slow.

You need 8" of throw (maybe even a little more) for a D60 with the tie rod in the stock location.

The last number, the 1", is the size of the shaft. The larger the shaft the less steering force you have in one direction (probably right) but the harder it will be to bend the shaft.

I run a 1.5"x8"x1" ram on mine and it works great. I have watched several rams with 5/8" rods bend.

I bought my tabs from a local shop. Also, make sure you know how you are going to mount your ram. I had to grind the weld out on one side of my ram, turn it 90 degrees and reweld it (kidjethro did the same thing).

For mounting tabs you can use Kurt's D60 Razorback diff cover with ram assist option (about 1/2 of the way down this page), or his stand alone Hydro Asssit Mount (about 3/4 of the way down this page).

I plan to use one or the other.

This is the ram I bought.

Thanx for the info I am willing to try almost anything at this point. I was actually thinking of callig Matt at West Texas Off Road to pick his brain. He is an AWESOME guy. I miss hangin with him and pickin his brain.
I was givin another Idea last night I am going to try first wish me luck

is it easier to tap on the end of the box with a new plate and on the adjusting plate than the side of the box?

The end cap is pretty thin. I plan to go with an aluminium JKW cap and then tap the top plate. I think that is the easiest route and you can move the parts to a new box if needed.
