There isn't enough clearance between the tie rod and axle tube to do that.

I believe it was KidJethro who did a nice and fancy hydro write up, where he threw his on a lathe and turned out the old weld, rotated it, and rewelded. There were a lot of detailed pics IIRC.I am having an issue with the ram. The fixed mount on the cylinder is rotated wrong. I need it flipped horizontal so the ports point up not at the axle tube or tie rod. Not sure if I could just carefully cut it of and re weld it or not.
The "ends" aren't just welded onto the ends. They fit inside the tube too (for alignment). All you have to do is grind the welds out until you can spin the "ends". You don't need to remove the end, just turn it. Keep the piston seal away from the welding heat and you will have no problems.
