Sorry to start another thread...but my pinion yoke is stuck on the pinion shaft. I've removed the nut and the axle is almost completely torn down. I've tried whacking it with a plastic-tipped hammer with no luck, and even a few somewhat gentle whacks with a metal hammer haven't budged it.

Any tips or tricks to get this thing loose? The only other thing I can think of is to use some sort of puller, like one with 2 arms on it and hope I can get it behind the 'ears' of the yoke. Also, I tried adding a little pressure with a huge flathead screwdriver from behind it--trying to pry it off. No go. :angry1:

FYI, the axle is still under the truck.

Try using an air hammer with a pointed chisel on the end of the pinion (end with the threads) there should be like a dimple..hit it there..Vibrate it loose

Use a two jaw puller.

I'll try both methods, thanks... After posting, I went out and tried beating the backside of the yoke with a hammer with no results.

jon, last one i took off a 14bff we used about a 4 or 5' piece of pipe and one held it against the back of the yoke and the other smacked it with an 8lb hammer... took 20 minutes or so...

Jeez...that sucks. Hopefully I won't have to recruit outside help, but that may be the only way. I am going to look into the 2-jaw-puller method tomorrow and see what I can get accomplished. This is just taking WAY too long, but sadly, it's going fast compared to my normal progress with the truck :(

Thanks for the tip.

you need a bigger hammer, get a 3 or 4 lb mini sledge...

Yeah, I know... It actually crossed my mind when I was in Sears earlier this evening. Don't know why I didn't grab one.

Last one I did I put a peice of 2x4 on the yoke and smacked it on* real hard once with a hammer to jar it loose then it just tapped off from the back with the hammer. I used the wood so as not to bust the yoke. For some reason, going the opposite direction of what I want usualy breaks things free easier than going the direction I want. Like bolts that are rusted or otherwize, tighten it then loosen it. Maybe Im just retarded

I'll try it... I actually see where that could work.

If you use a hammer make sure you use a block of wood or something to hit against. Otherwise you will ruin the pinion. For example, pinion out of my IFS front (gear swap so didnt care)

Use a 2 jaw puller as mentioned.

I have pulled 3 off in the last couple weeks. Use air if you have it and a second pair of hands to hold the puller can help.

Any specific recommendations on which puller to get? I'm kinda blanking right now, what are the 2-jaw pullers normally used for?

You asked what type of puller would work....the link was meant as a reference for you to find one that would work. That way you can go to wherever you go to aquire one, and know what ya need before ya get there. :wink1:

Ok... this is starting to piss me off. :angry1:

I went to Harbor Freight and grabbed a cheap set of three 2-jaw pullers. I used the large one, and got the pinion yoke off with EASE.

Thanks for that suggestion...

So, I go to knock the pinion itself out. NO GO. WTF. I gave it Hell, I really did. I beat the ever-lovin' shiit out of it with the hammer, but it's not budging. I really don't want to f-up the gears since I plan to reuse them.

But this is insane...please advise me :(

brass punch. a.k.a brass tube or anything. it will break before the pinion will. snapon is like 60.00 and harbor is like 10.00 but you can go to a metal place a get a scrap piece for cheap.
