Gm dana 60 srw from a military truck. 4.56 gears. The guy says it has 33 spline axles? Is this right? Anyways it is complete minus the lock outs. I figure I could install warn premiums.

Qusestions:
What else do I need to look at?
Will my crossover steering work off of my Dana 44 or will I need all new stuff?
Is $700 too much without the lockouts?
Anything else?

Thanks!

Front D60's can only have a few different spline counts: 19 (I'm pretty sure that one is right), 32 and 35.

The 19 spline stuff is really old and mostly closed knuckle.

The 32 spline stuff is mostly on later model Dodges.

All GM D60's are 35 spline.

I believe your crossover steering will work, GM used 1 ton sized TREs on all their trucks.

$700 is a very good deal for a SRW D60 with good (4.56) gears.

You'll need new arms for the D60 crossover, as the D44 knuckles are different.

The tierod might need to be a different length; though less likely, the draglink might need to be tweaked.

At least the steering arm you've got now should be fine =))

So if I get this axle I am thinking I should probably rebuild the kingpins right? Do I just need the spring deal and the bushing deal?

And if I convert to 35 spline stub shafts all I will need is two 35 spline stub shafts and hubs to match?

Yep, they are almost always worn out. Cheap and easy to replace, I wouldn't bother replacing the kingpin itself unless it looks REALLY bad.

Yep, but you may want to consider drive flanges. 35 spline lockout aren't really any stronger than 30 spline ones (in general), so your "upgrade" to 35 spline stuff might not get you as far as you hope if you run lockouts.

There have been a few people who have had good luck with stock Spicer lockouts that have been broached to 35 spline. The Spicer hubs are much more stout than any of the aftermarket stuff but they are often pretty worn from 25 years of use.

Like I said, for $150 I'd seriously consider drive flanges and never worry about it again.

But if I went with flanges and a locker I would be kinda screwed on the street right (and turning radius on the trail)? Unless I went with a selectable locker $$$ ?

yes its very unstreetable with a locker in the front and flanges BUT you could run a locrite for cheap and easy or spend the money and go ARB or OX locker it would be worth it but just depends on how much $$$ u got to spend and with the economy down the ******* its hard to sacrifice that kinda dough well atleast for most haha..

A mechanical locker in the front with drive flanges works fine, the locker won't lock up unless power is applied to it.

I've driven mine around (Detroit in the front, drive flanges) in 2WD a bunch, I've never noticed anything from the front unless I'm in 4WD.

Yea I got the same deal, detroit and flanges. The little driving I have done in 2wd has been normal, 4wd, thats a different story

Ok so where is the best place to get drive flanges/slugs? Is there a difference or just different names?

EDIT: Would these work? Or these?

Is there a cap included with that 1st one? The 2nd would work but look around. There are sooo many companies that make flanges/slugs (same thing). There are even a few vendors here that make them. I have the polyperformance slugs with the skull & crossbones on em. NWF, SOLID, Rockcrusher, ATOR, are just a few of the other companies.

The only difference you are going to find is cover design and whether or not you can run the cap installed with out the slug

Gotcha thanks! I found a vendor on here and sent them a PM. I hope they still have them on sale.

Man I am sweating now. I called the guy this morning to pick up the D60 and he said his buddy already gave him some money to hold it for him. I told him I have the cash in hand and would get it "right now" and he said he would call his buddy and find out when he is going to have the money. Said if he can't get the money to him by saturday then the axle is mine. I have to call him tonight to find out.

Well I called him but he hasn't called back. He has a few D60s but only one 4.56. I know he has a 4.10. Is there any difference in the carrier between the gears? If I put 4.56 gears in it would it be the same as an original 4.56? Thanks!

That's what I thought! Something to do with ring gear thickness right? So should I stick with 4.56?
