I have been thinking about finding an old Yota and building a Formula 4 chassis with the running gear and 1 tons out of my K5. Is this a stupid Idea?

I really want a 4 seat buggy and even a cut down K5 weighs almost 5k. I understand with 1 tons that is almost #1000 just in unsprung weight but I already have them and are locked or welded. Will a yota 5 speed and tcase hold up to a mild 350 or would I need a gm trans and a different tcase?

No money right now just sort of brain storming. Any and all input is appreciated.

Come on nobody has anything to say for or against my idea? I was searching on Pirate and noticed that there is a guy building one with full width axles that looked pretty mean.

I wanna keep the 60 and 14FF because I would run 44 TSLs or 47 LTBs.

Also scrapping the blazer and using its frame is an option but I like the full boxed-ness of the yota frames.

Come on guys give me advice or kick me in the nuts do something just dont give me the silent treatment:doah:

i don't know if the yota drivetrain would hold up so I'd be more likely to throw in the GM powertrain since it will hold up for sure

hold on to your shorts east county boy the right people will be able to give you the right answers at some point but its not always going to be as soon as you want

Put a CC body on your frame.

I would have to have the wheel wells cut into the door opening. I dont have a long bed like you:D .

I was also thinking a Formula Four chassis to cut the weight. The guys on pirate are anywhere from #2400 in comp trim to 3100 loaded for the trail with spares and full fuel. That is over #2000 less than my K5 as it sits right now:doah: .

Just thinking out load for the most part but I have always wanted a 4 seat buggy with way more motor than it really needs:D . I got no money so all I can do is dream. I have not even broached this topic with the "acountant" yet:D

You actually live in the city I grew up in :haha: and I know the area pretty well seeing that I've only been here about 3 yrs and I don't ever want to go back:D

As far as weight goes, and thinking out loud here, why not 10 bolts for axles? Cheap, easy to find and if you keep the power down I "think" they would do just fine. And the unsprung weight is a lot less.

Hmm a V6 (4.3?) and a turbo 350 backed with a 208 and 4.56 gears in 10 bolts with some 37 inch tires should be fairly light and cheap to maintain.
I know you have the one tons....isn't that about what Marv's recipe is?

I am gonna go bigger than 37 I am looking in the 44 to 47 range.:D

The only really Yota part will be the frame and Formula Four chassis everything else will be GM or aftermarket. I like the idea of the 4.7 yota case but I do not think they will hold up to a 350 on big tires.

I agree the best light weight/cheap way to go would be 10 bolts and a V6 but if I am doing that then I would just keep the yota drive train and axles as I feel the yota axles are stronger than 10 bolts.

I think I would rather have a chevy version of the Formula Four chassis.

I think it would be easier in the long run.

GM500HP of something like that on here has a formula 4 or and X chassis on a K5 frame that is linked. I wanna run the full width axles so I can run larger tires will little lift. If makes it wider for the trail but I imagine I could deal with it.

For the cost of tubing I dont think I could build a DOM chassis like Hendricks for the price they get for them. Ya it will need some gusseting and finishing but nothing like the engineering involved with designing a full chassis.

I also already have all of the GM stuff I just need a yota frame and a chassis.

I would most likely go full hydro on it also as it would not be street legal anymore:D .

Maybe one of these days when I have more than cob-webs in my wallet I'll dive into a project like that.
I would love to tube out my K10, but I think the plan for now is to drop a CC on it when I return to NorMex (SoCal).

Bring your welder:deal:

I can hold a #10 spool I can burn rod all day (if my 50CF bottle will last):doah: .

Once we get an actual house where I can take the truck down and not get the HOA pissed it will be closer to reality. Right now though I have to keep it running and move it every so often.:o

I hope I can get a place that would allow me the space to do the CC swap on mine. Should be doable in a weekends time though.

While you have everything off you might as well tube and taper the front:D

Hell if I have my place you can do it there. RV parking is a requirment for the house we are gonna buy. I dont own and RV it will be the "fab" area:D .
