I got the tires.*HMMWV wheel question post 96*

Swampers suck. Their quality has went down the tubes. The BFG AT is a great all around tire except for mud. I think the new Goodyear MT/R is one of the best all around tires. I have seen them go through some thick goo and was suprised how well they did. Also they are very true to size. I have ran Swamper's, BFG M/T's and AT's, Krawlers, MT/R's, and Maxxis Treps. For wheeling only the Treps and Krawlers rock but for a weekend wheeler the MT/R's seem like the best.

Are the new goodyear MT/R kevlars any good? I don't have any experience with them. The only experience I have with the MT/R are the old ones, and from what I've seen is they cup real bad.

I really like my LTB's.

I ran them on the street for about 6 months before my rig became trail only. They were ok for a Bias tire.

Our terrain is probably similar to yours. No matter crawling or trail riding its wet. They do well everywhere and mud is not an issue. I am going to groove mine this summer as well.

Couple guys I wheel with run Rockers and they dont seem to bad in the mud. Now its not southern clay, but if you can spin your tires they will clean out.

Check with Natl tire or 4wp or the Vendors on Pirate. They may be able to get those tires, or have them on the shelf.

Oh another note on the LTB's. They are listed as 16" wide, but the tread is probably realisticly 13-14. They are wide, but not 16". There are pics in my build compared to some 37x12.50 SSRs.

The LTB's are what I really want. I wonder how my H2's would handle the width?

I already called national tire and 4wp's and neither have them in stock. I haven't tried the vendors on pirate yet. But, from the sound of it from Interco, if they don't have them in stock, they won't be able to get them, atleast from Interco.

LTB's have been on back order with interco for over 2 years now, also along with alot of the other tires larger the 35". Interco sold all of their molds to a Chinese tire manufacturer 3 years ago and they are very slow at making the tires. If you can find someone with a set, get them while you can. otherwise you are SOL on them.

That is how I ended up with my IROKs that was all I could find in 39.5s

I never had any issues with the old MT/R's and I ran them for almost 10 years. I have not ran the new ones but know several people that do and we run the stickys on the race rig and they seem to hold up well.

I had new 35 Swamper SSR... that look bad ass... and ride surprisingly good for a swamper being they are radial... but I wanted to tone down the ride a little bit ( my truck is a mall queen too) I wanted a tire in between a regular all terrain and aggressive Swamper like tire. So I sold them while I could still get most my money back out of them and got a set of the new goodyear MT/R kevlars...same size. If I could do it all over again.. I would have keep the swampers. The MTR's are nice, a little bit quieter than the SSR's.... but the ride is the same if not worse. I think they probably didn’t balance a tire all the way ... but I have also heard the some people with the new MTR's can't ever get them balanced correctly.

The MTR's that came on my wifes Jeep were about 50% worn at 25k miles which is good but they were cupped bad. They made a ton of noise and rode pretty bad too.

They will ride bad if they are cupped. Proper alignment, rotation, and tire pressure will keep it from happening but most people don't do anything to their tires untill they have problems and then blame the tires. They should be normal maintenance. That goes for any tires.

Also, don't try to balance a tire bigger then a 32 or 33 with weights on the wheel. Use balancing beeds instead. I couldn't believe the differance it made in tire wear on my second set of MT/R's compared to the first. The nice thing is as the tire wears the balance vhanges and the beads keep them balanced.

That's the way I've been balancing the tires on my blazer for years and don't plan on going back to the conventional wheel weights.

I also have a set of hmmwv wheels that I need to recenter. I'd go that route if I could find a steal on tires.

A question on recentering wheels, is all you do is get the new centers (in my case it'd be the pressed centers), cut out the old center using the bolted on ring as the template, flip the wheel over and put the new center in threw the backside, and weld it in? How do you make sure the center is in straight, just with a tape measure?

If I lived in Cali that wouldn't be a problem, but no one close to me ever posts what I'm looking for on craigslist...

yep, I seem to have a large quantity of tires people don't end up liking :haha: Unfortunately many of them are on 20s or larger. :poo:

But you might also be too picky. I have (2) 38" Mickeys, (2) 38" Toyos, and (1) 37" Trxus for my spare. Rims are four 18" and a 17" lol. :doah:whatever :dunno::D The strictly mud tires are hard to find though. Most here are on road queens and are often bald by the time they try to sell.

I saw that, but I'm not too crazy out iroks. I also hear that they suck in our mud... I talked to B_Dub yesterday and today and he said that from what he's done with his rockers they are ok, but he'd rather has swampers. He did say that they clean out pretty good if you spin them alittle. I'm good at spinning tires :thumb::D
