it seems,or so i was told, Saturday night after the circle track race was over, we stopped at a steakhouse to eat. a friend of a friend of an enemy, told me, while we were eating, another competitor(that i flog every weekend) stopped at the waffle house next to the steakhouse, well, he supposedly put 4-6 restaurant sugar packets in the dirt track car fuel cell.

how can i test my fuel to see if this is true? i plan to drain/clean the fuel cell regardless, but i would like to see if it does indeed have sugar in the fuel, before i put him into the wall next weekend!

how much sugar in the fuel would it take before catastrophic damage would occur?since the engine hasn't been run since, this supposedly took place, how concerned should i be about the fuel in the lines and fuel pump? any ideas?

I would drain and clean the fuel cell and flush out all of the lines regaurdless of how much sugar was put in there. As far as the fuel pump goes, where is it located? If it's in the fuel cell then I would try to clean that as best I could or just try to save face and put in a new one. If it's inline or on the engine, I wouldn't worry so much about it. I would take the fuel line loose from the eigine side and pump clean fuel through it to flush it out. Good luck in the next race and try to get someone to take pics of you putting him in the wall. :waytogo:

yea, its running a stock placement cam driven edelbrock pump, i think i will clean my fuel cell throughly, and run regular rubber fuel line from there to pump, while i throughly clean out my braided steel lines, also going to figure a way to rig a lock on my fuel cell!

Mythbusters did a thing on sugar in the gas tank. They used a small block, poured an assload of sugar in the clear tank they were drawing from and nothing happened. They tried all sorts of things and it kept on running just fine...It finally took more than a gallon of bleach IIRC to make stuff happen...

Definitely find a way to secure your fuel cell though...

X2 on the MythBusters thing..... that small amount of sugar won't do anything.

However, when you DO beat him next week be sure to tell him that he lost becuase your motor has been running really sweet lately.

Remove his air cleaner and dump a load of dog**** in it...
when it won't start tell him..

" you must have some crap in the carburetor "

:haha::haha::haha:

when i raced dirt track we used to do the p.i.t. manuver that the cops use to take people out just do it sneaky .or get some friends and box him into the wall

Before reading the other posts I was going to say I didn't know what would happen to the engine, but that a decent fuel filter should easiliy catch the sugar grains before it got there. Back in college a buddy had an old CJ-7 that started running pretty bad and would cut out and not start occasionally. Found out somebody put sugar in the gas tank but the running issues were simply because the small filter/screen right before the carb was getting clogged...cleaned out or replaced the filter and it would run fine until it got clogged again.

A small amount of sugar isn't going to do anything, large quantities of sugar will glaze the cylinder walls and make the rings not seal anymore, (lack of compression, engine will start smoking).

Is there anyway to prove he did this (if in fact he did)? If so i would tell the officials who run the event and have him removed from any further racing rather than trying to retaliate on him (that makes you no better then him).

thats 1 reason i asked how i could tell if my fuel actually does have sugar in it, i plan on telling the officials but at this point , it would be his word against mine, even if i did get someone to say they know/saw him do it, it would be hear say, so yea...the pit manuever is what i was thinkin, i was drafting him went to pass and got bumped hard from behind,..it was an accident...sorry he flipped,

thats if i ever find myself behind him, thats what he's po'd about, he's loaded w/sponsors and i'm running out my pocket and i always finish in front of him(sometime he dnf & i'm in top 3) and 1 of his largest sponsors have actually approached me about running their brand name on my car, its car quest and i would get a parts account w/them, so parts free or jobber price, depending on how big an item we are talking about,

and its hearsay around the pit that they are pulling his sponsorship and he's vowed to put whoever runs their colors/logo on the trailer, he pulled this stunt after just see'n me talking to the owner of the local car quest store, can't wait to see what he thinks when i roll out the new paint job, b/c w/only 1 sponsor ,i can really lay their colors and logos on heavy

I have had two cars on my lot get their tanks "sweetened" and nothing bad has happened. One of these cars is my 97 Z28 DD. I simply changed the fuel filter after that tank of gas then again after another 2. Just to be sure it was gone. Neither vehicle ever had any problems. I do know large amounts of sugar "can" harm things but that small amount shouldn't harm anything. After about 6 months I did end up dropping one of the tanks and checking it. No sign of anything in them. Hope this helps. I still recommend cleaning the tank and flushing of course especially with a high po motor :D

You could put a long hose on a turkey baster, suck some fuel out and take it to one of the local college labs or something of the like- Maybe some medical place could do it.

Secondly, are their cameras in the parking lot where your car was parked? If so speak to the manager of that place and let him know that you have reason to suspect their camera may have caught an act of vandalism. See if you can review the tape.

i hadn't thought about parking lot cameras, if i could get that, they would prolly ban him from the track, but then i'm worried about retaliation even more, kinda feel like i'm in a lose-lose situation.

Simple to tell if there is sugar in your tank. Sugar does not dissolve very well in gas. Pull the tank and drain it out you will be able to see the sugar. As Said a small amount wont hurt your engine just clog your filter. To damage an engine you would need to pour a whole bag in.
Sugar really wont hurt an engine that bad. It just clogs the fuel filters. Molasses works far better to gum/carbon up an engine than sugar.

Sugar does not really dissolve in gasoline. It dissolves in the moisture in the gas. An old remedy that they used to do was to pour about a gallon of water into the tank and stir it up good. Then siphon out the water and all the sugar comes out with the water.
The sugar content of the water can then be tested with a refractometer. Check with your local soft drink company, or anyone who has to mix sugar compounds. Orange Julius ( are they still in business?) always had one to test the concentration of the sugar solution they made their drinks with.
