I hate the Hemi!!

an LS6? brainwashed by brand loyalty

Might have to do with the LS6 being the highest rated motor of the muscle car era at 450 hp BONE stock... :deal: :pimp:

torque was 500 ft lbs... if you did the same stuff that was done on the hemi to the ls6 it would make just as much or more hp and tq, it was starting from a step above the hemi.

The hemi were a lot of hype because of richard petty... but still an awesome motor. No Ls6 tho ;) :pimp:

no hype about a 426 hemi, they put down mad power to the ground. I have personally seen a original hemi car that had a bigger mopar performance cam and headers getting tuned on a dyno put down close to 600 rwp....it was at 579 when i left, and they were still messing with jets and timing. The street engines were bassically detuned race engines. For you triva and racing buffs, The 426 was designed to kick ass in NASCAR, which it did. This caused the racing body to make a rule change requiring manufacturers to race a production engine....doubt it if you want.

50-75 hp for the cam and headers...... and the other 150+hp from dyno tuning?

I'd like to know what you call "dyno tuning" ... 150+ hp from dyno tuning... :screwy: :surepal:

Acceleration and top speed was the only thing it really had going for it.

What else could you ask for from an engine?? If you want MPGs, you're gonna have to give up on performance.

I dont know where you guys are getting your info about Hemis from. But the 426 hemis that Dodge/Chrysler put in their muscle cars were 425 Hp and 490 torque. @ 5000 rpm
They came with 2 carter AFB 4BBl carbs. They put out more power than that. BUT were under rated for insurance reasons. Power was more like 500 Hp at 6k rpm. Redline on hemis was 6500 RPM. They were powerhouses.
Also I have never seen a hemi come from the factory with a 6 pack. 6 packs came on 440s and 360s. 440 sixpac Cudas were offerd in Hemi orange color. Maby thats where the confusion comes from.

Early hemis were rated around 325 HP but that was back in the 50s

340 engine was offered with a 6 pack, 360 never was. The Dodge version of the triple 2 barrel carb set up was "6 Pack", the Plymouth version was called "6 Barrel", same set up, just different names. I'm almost possitive the 340 6 packs (or 6 Barrels) were only offered on the 1970 T/A Challenger and the 1970 AAR Cudas.

The early Hemis rated at 325 HP were probably 392 Hemis.

It's been a long time since I did the Mopar Hot Rod thing .... my 69 Charger has been garaged for the last 3 years .... I haven't even seen it. This thread makes me want to pull it out and play a bit!! No Hemi, not even a 440 .... just a plane old 383 :(

In 1985 I drove from San Francisco to Las Angeles with $7K for an 82 GMC K3500 dually. I got a block away from my home and there was a 1969 R/T Hemi Charger in a driveway. I stopped, found the owner who was visiting a relative and started talking. He would've sold it to me for $7K. I thought about it and jumped back into my car and headed off to buy my dually 4x4. The biggest mistake I ever made. The dually went down in value and if you want to know what a Hemi Charger is worth, check out a Hemmings

Oh Well,

Eric M.

Uh oh i guess i better bown down...

lol

get over yourself man... I was saying that in a joking manner and the ls6 numbers are right i checked them.

please tell me what was wrong with that post?

I said that because there are rwhp tests showing the STOCK 426 laying down 330 rwhp... it was my opinion not being presented as fact.

you do realize that 600 rwhp means about 670 hp at the fywheel... does that seem right to you for a hemi with nothing but headers, cam, and some jetting?

Just a guess but this is your first time on ck5 or in the garage in a while... am i right?

I think daleearnhardt response was pointed towards my post. Sorry if I pissed anyone off, just offering up what I know to help out.

And whining about the Hemi I missed out on ...

Only numbers on paper i care about are the actually engine specs...i dont care what claimed HP numbers were at the time. They were all a publicity game.

- I dont know how you figure you can tell how many HP a cam adds without looking at its profile and the total engine specs. You must be one of those guys that can buy the latest and greatest **** out of the magazine and piece together a 500 hp small block, becuase thats how the numbers add up.

-how many 450 HP Ls6 motors were built to be exact? and is it a production motor. I have seen reports that they put down more than 450 HP at the rear. find out it will surprise you.

-just the possible air fuel intake of 1300 CFM should give you a hint at the power, you ever drive an over carbed car? If the 426 cars were they wouldnt be doing 12's in street trim.

- its ok i understand.

The Hemi came in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in its debut Nascar race. Richard Petty drove all 3?

You realize its possible get more then 50-75 hp out of cam and headers? Who claimed 150hp from a Dyno tune? You did.

No but he is the winningest driver ever to race in nascar and what brand did he do it with? Dodge...but you already knew that.

No actually i figured 75 hp with a cam and headers seemed about right but I guess the gains are a lot higher when your dealing with that much hp. Also we don't know what cam it had so lets turn away from that road before we get to it... i don't feel like arguing.

If you do the math its actually more than 150hp hence the 150+ .... even if the cam and headers gave him over 100 hp there is still another 150 hp on the table.

425 flywheel hp
+ 100 hp cam and headers

525 hp but... say the cam and headers added 120 hp... there is still 130 hp to be accounted for. I'm not saying its not possible but its a little hard to beleive. Of course the hemi lovers are going to post telling me that its a hemi of course its possible... :tongue1: :surepal:

Rugger claimed that a cam, headers, and a dyno tune would get the hemi up at 600 rwhp or roughly 675 flywheel. I didn't claim 150+ hp from a dyno tune... the math did.

- I did? i think i said close to 600 HP.

-there was never a baseline done to tell what the engine put out prior to the cam and header install, once again your using the factory claimed number which is well known to be a understatement to apease the insurance comapnies.

-Agian where are you getting your numbers from on how much headers and a cam add? The claimed power increases of bolt on parts you pull out a jegs catalog for for a 350 doesnt apply.

-just by doing a quick search i found this, not that it will change your aleady made up mind. Keep in mind th original hemi had higher compression, and was flowing 400 more CFM than this test engine. Yes i know your going to say there is a different intake as well....oh well. If i get really motivated and have time i will venture over to my friends dads house, take some pictures of the car, and photo copy the dyno sheet if he has it still. And believe it or not i haven't read that write up before today....i havent looked at a Mopar magazine in over 10 years.

LOL you are totally right. Man I hate senility. Anyone seen my mind bouncing around here in cyberspace? I seem to have lost it somewhere.

You are correct my friend...

Eric M that comment was not directed at you at all... I was posting in response to dirtwarrior's "know it all" attitude that is so common these days...
