I plan on working on the rig today, as I took the day off. I still will work later, but I had planned on starting early to see what I could get done. Well monkeynuts here (me) leaves the harmonic balancer bolt he bought yesterday in his mothers car (which won`t be back here for at least a couple hours). That would have allowed me to put that on, and use a breaker bar to turn the motor over.:doah:

I could have made the patches for all the holes in the firewall that are allowing water to get in, and also clean up the edges of the tranny hump so I could get that in, but where did I leave the tin snips? Oh, thats right, it the back of my stepdads truck when I brought them to work a week ago to make the taps i fixed my radiator shrowd with. :doah:

I could mount my radiator if I had a 2x2 piece of square tube, hell I could start my bed if I had more peices of it, and a welder, but where did I leave that? Oh, thats right, I can`t afford it yet :doah:

what do you need to turn your motor over for?

your a big ol boy if you put the harmonic balancer on you should be able to turn it by hand, if not grab a strap wrench if you have one and use it to turn it over.

your second one sucks not much you can do there

as for the third, sell yourself on the street, quick easy cash and they may even give you a ride down to the metal store to get what you need as long as you ride them back :haha:

To adjust/tighten the rocker arms.

I was able to do that the first time I tried, but believe it or not, trying to do it was a little difficult. I think you have to get it to a certain point where one valves at one position, and the others at another. I figured using the breaker bar would be easier.

whats your expected compression ratio? i just got done installing mine and yes i used a breaker bar but it was easy enough i think i could have done it by hand

if i remember right your motor is in the truck right? but you have no front clip on so you can get to it pretty easy?

in 5 minutes you can be in business, drop the starter, add a wire to your s terminal on the solenoid, then add a second long wire on to the mail power where the battery connects, just twist the wire on the connections o you can simply pull them off later

take the long wires and touch them together when you need to bump it over, the longer you hold them the more it will crank, it works just like turning the key but you dont need two people..

or just use a screw driver to bump it

Yep, motors in truck, but front clip is on.

Comp ration should be around 9.0:1 with the vortec heads.

That would work, except for theres no starter in the truck, nor a battery or any wiring to speak off

Ben,

Half the battle (as you discovered) is having a plan of attack worked out ahead of time. Sort of like those "sports visualizations" that athletes do, you must create a mental image of the day and work through all the steps and tools that you will need... maybe. :dunno:

well what the hell, get on it:blush:
:o:o

Yeah, its something I`ve just never done, but really need to start doing it. I did it once, when I swapped axles in the snow last winter, and it made a huge difference. Not having to mess around in the snow and in the shed looking for tools was great.

Maybe I should just spend the morning writing out what I need to do all these little tasks.

I really need to get back out there soon and start working on it before work like I was when I first started. I just really needed this weekend to just relax and take a break from work, if I had to swipe my time card one more time I`d probably throw it away. Working that weekend, and making my work week 12 days long was something I don`t ever plan on doing again :doah:

That's the hard part....

Psychologically, I don't consider "planning" to be forward progress, even though obviously it's a HUGE part of being efficient and getting things done. Intellectually, I understand it's importance but it's not the "fun part" of a build.

Fortunately for most of us, we are forced to do planning when the money dries up and we can't do anything else for a while. Those "saving up money" periods are a great time to plan out the next part of the build in detail, so that when the money does eventually arrive we can jump right in and make up for lost time.

Well put...

way to go monkey nuts:wink1:

Oh boy, there goes the neighborhood :haha:

Wow. Been at it for a few hours now. Have about 10 pages of stuff, and it keeps coming and coming. I even have a sketch of how I think the bed will end up.

It`s amazing how much this is making me feel better about the project. I still have alot left to do, but seeing it on paper, and knowing what to do next and having an idea beforehand should make it go alot smoother and less stressfull.

I have found that making "to-do" lists really help. You can really see what has to be done for your rig to be driveable and wheelable. Also its a good way to see what needs to be ordered and then you decide whento order it. I've been doing this alot lately. I've ordered something almost every week for the last two months and I've probably made 6 trips to NAPA in that time frame

It sure does help. I have a clip board with about 10 pages full of stuff, and just coming back to this thread has me thing of more things.

It spins over allot easier if you pull the sparkplugs out.

Sparkplugs are out. Its more awkward than anything, not really that hard to turn. Its alright to use the breaker bar, right?
