Re: I miss posting pic\'s here

Wow, lots of good stuff and I have thought about a lot of this.

Reasons why I have crappy Burstnet ads and not 4x4 related, this is the response I get from vendors:
1. ColoradoK5.com who?
2. Your to small.
3. I sell Jeep parts get lost.
4. We don't pay for advertising.
5. Were just starting out and don't have the money. (I get this one the most from the vendors who use this site to make money for their business)

What I meant buy the statement kepping the content unbiased was that IF I were to get some 4x4 related advertising it would be hard to bite the hand that feeds me.

As far as what costs it is the forums and my time, right now I have an infant son so I would rather spend the time and the money that I loose on this site on him. Right now the readers ride page is broken, should I go fix it, yeah, but whats my incentive to fix it, no one pays me to keep things fixed and I'm burned out so I will fix it maybe next year if at all - you can see where I'm going, don't want to sound like a bastard but it's my reality. I truly love this site and it's my baby but the more traffic I get the more it costs me to run and I need to do something fast.

Re: I miss posting pic\'s here

I say go ahead and do the $20 or $25 annual fee. I can only imagine the hell you go through keeping this thing running, and running well. I'll gladly offer my time to help chase down advertisers, funding, whatever else you could use a hand with - This is too good of a resource to lose.

Re: I miss posting pic\'s here

Even with a membership fee it sounds like you are out of time and motivation.
If the site covers expenses and then some will you take more time from your family? I don't think so. Divvy up some of the admin duties to Moderatar/Admins that you choose. There are quite a few qualified and enthusiastic web-types in our ranks. Put em to work!

Re: I miss posting pic\'s here

If you open upp all the goodies again I would gladly pay 20 dollars a year for it. That's not alot of money to subscribe to this site. Let new unsubscribers into a "newbie" board so they can post and read with "anonymus" status. Then the hardcore subscribing users have the main board with all the fancy buttons and posting opertunitys.

The longer you wait the harder it gets.

Re: I miss posting pic\'s here

I kinda like the burstnet ads, they're not overly intrusive and I don't think they'll bias anything here :) I know you've got family and I often wonder how you find time for us and for them as well. Understand that while we appreciate the time you spend on us most of us want you to take whatever time/money is needed/wanted for your family. I mistakenly understood there to be some advertising by 4x4 retailers taking place. This was based on some previous forum posts by others. Sorry for that confusion. As nice as readers rides is I think you could probably bag it to save the forums. Thats just my opinion but others may well concur. If the forums are where the money is going then it may well be time for a few changes. I'd be willing to sacrifice every other forum for the main one. The second one that I'd like to see saved would be the parts for sale. I'm sure others will disagree with me but if its time to cut back then those would be the cuts I'd be happiest with. As far as time, I wish I had a way to give you some. I can code vb but I don't think that's going to help you out here, although if you need someone to review the code I'm more than happy to spend some time to help the site out. As well you may find other members willing to help out with whatever you need. I can't begin to imagine what running a site like this takes from you timewise but know that if it is help you need by all means let me know what I can do. Point me at code, send me to find advertising, whatever it may be I'm happy to help out.

3 Sidenotes:
A) If a membership fee is the way you choose to go, perhaps posting/replying/pictures are associated with pay memberships and just reading is free.
B) I'm not sure that memberships will prevent burnout.
C) Have you looked into offsite hosting? There are a number of good boards out there. I don't know how they do with our ammount of traffic but it may be something to look at.

Re: I miss posting pic\'s here

Perhaps we could all scout local shops/etc. that might be interested in purchasing an ad - the worst they could do is tell us no. Let's all do our part to help out!

Re: I miss posting pic\'s here

A) Could be a good idea
B) Me either, I just need some time to step away and wheel.
C) I may have to do that, of course that would mean outsourcing 90% of this site which means I would make absolutly NO revenue at all for the limited ads that I do have.

See, either way I'm screwed, I'm looking for ways to ad revenue so I can add more features that will bring in more traffic and I would like to make a little extra for my time, maybe even a little back pay.

Keep in mind you guys are not here because I have a flashy site (you might as well go elsewhere) it's the quality content, I have had quite a few of the "Yeah, I will write that tech article" and only a few have come through (thank's guys) which means I have to write most of if not all of them myself. If I had revenue I could offer to pay for said articles and get additional content, most people will not submit things because they find out that it is work and they are not getting anything in return. (hmm, kind of like me I guess)

Right now, I'm just kicking ideas around so I can plan for the future.

Re: I miss posting pic\'s here

I would GLADLY pay for the site just as it sits. It would be nice to get the pics back. BUT, the forum is worth every penny. Keep the adds, I don't care. Make some money, YOU SHOULD!!!! I say, we all any up 30 bucks a year. That is less then .09 cents a day. A DAY PEOPLE!!!!!! There should not even be a question. Viewing is free, thats fine. Give new members a 2 week free trial, the let the pay 30 bucks. for the year. If you don't want to pay then you can always go to the other freebies. Ofcoarse the suck ass compared to this place!!!!! Steve, seriously, make it a pay to play type of place!!!!!

Re: I miss posting pic\'s here

$20 a year is CHEAP!! I can't begin to add up the money I have saved by getting answers from you guys versus paying a mechanic (that I wouldn't necessarily trust anyway). How much is a subscription to 4WOR or 4 Wheeling? Probably $12-15 a year? How much more info and more fine tuned and useful do we get here versus those mags we fork out the bucks for?

I think you let anonymous users havea two week, full privilege trial. I GUARANTEE they will get hooked. I did after only a few days. They will realize the value and pony up the money. If they don't, then they are cheap and probably wouldn't benefit us too much anyway.

Pics would be nice, but maybe that should be something that could be configureable for each user (whether to display them or not). I have ample bandwidth here at work, but pics would really impact this site's performance when I dial in at home.

And in comparison of costs, name one part other than a u-joint that any of us could by for our trucks for less than $20 or $30!

One last thing is this won't make you rich and it won't give you more time with your family. I agree with getting some others to help you out. There are plenty of us around that are in the computer business that would be willing to offer a helping hand. Just ask, Steve. We ask you when we need help on our trucks. You ask us when you need help with this site. I don't think anyone with disagree that family should come first. Even before our 4 bys. While we may not always adhere to that, I think we would all agree.

As with the others, just my .02

Re: I miss posting pic\'s here

Just do it. Weeds out the ones that don't really care to stay. Do you need to manage the forums much? Or just some times? You need time for your family too. The articles can come whenever, the forum is the BEEF.

Re: I miss posting pic\'s here

Thanks guys, the forums are fine as far as time goes and I have grim to moderate them for me. Right now I am in fact finding mode to see if all this will work as far as a marketing stand point goes.

Re: I miss posting pic\'s here

I actually have a question on that - How do I submit a tech article? I've been working on two - one on the steering column fix, and a tech/review on the coilover stabilizer.

Send text to [email protected] with links to the pics is the best, the reviews sound cool.

Re: I miss posting pic\'s here

Cool deal - The steering fix will take a couple days to get edited, and I'm planning to run about 500 interstate miles in the next couple of weeks to give the coilover a real review, and I'll get them on their way

Re: I miss posting pic\'s here

I'd also gladly pay $20 a year. This site would be well worth it.

If you think you HAVE to make it a pay site though, you're wrong. I've been a member of www.ford-diesel.com for a long time, and it's the mission of the webmaster to never make it a pay site. Jason Lester is his name. If you're interested in communicating with him, you can email him at [email protected].

The Diesel Page is a joke. I am glad I never jointed. Jim Bigley has some really rotten ideas about how a forum should be run.
