Did your father give any indication as to what exactly is wrong with the current engine?

All I know is that some cooler line blew and he said it was shot. The truck sat for about 15 years while he was trying to find a replacement/ something he could afford. I was leaning towards the 350, because it was the second diesel engine and he swore that the Detroit diesels were junk. I would love to keep the 6.2 for the sound alone and the memories it brings back but, right now I want to see it on the road.

Pay for premium membership, start build thread to document the build process, also everything you ask and the replies in one thread.

Pictures help more than you think. It clears up what can be lost in explanation/descriptions, especially with newer guys to the trucks, it also lets the older guys take their daily walk down memory lane in your build thread.:D

Kidding aside, the $30 or so for a membership is a small price to pay when your truck is running again. The guys here will make sure of it...
Welcome...

What is my best option? I've never attempted an engine swap let alone from diesel to gas. My father in law has done plenty but never tbi into a non tbi truck. Starting to feel alot over my head here.

Swapping all of the TBI components and harness isn't something that would be necessarily fun or for a beginner. Yes, you have all of the parts and a template, however you would want to swap the fuel tanks, the lines and wiring for them, (assuming that you have dual tanks),
And then the ECM, it's mounting tray and harness. It would easiest to swap the complete wiring harness for the whole cab, rather than trying to power the fuel pumps and ECM with the older fuse block.
Post up some pictures of both trucks, please. I would contemplate swapping body parts and possibly axles myself. It would just depend on overall condition of both.

A carbureted 350 would be much easier to swap into the diesel truck, but I don't know how difficult it would be to find a good one. The last one I did 20 years ago, we just built a 350 so that we had a good base. That could be too expensive and more than you want to tackle.

I would want to save the '87 if it is worth it, even though I crushed one years ago that had rust, and a sick 305 and no options.

Dude, put a carbed 350 and call it done. all that wiring.. ugh, gives me anxiety thinking about it. Why not just leave diesel in there as is?

Can you please upload as many pictures of both vehicles as possible. It's in your best interest in getting the best responses to your questions.

I would have loved to just put a 350 carbed in it but I already had a tbi available. The diesel is seized up or I would have loved to use that. The wiring seems overwhelming but I just can't afford another option. It's what I got

I understand...when I redid my 69 c10, I did everything except the wiring. I just paid a shop to do it, granted mine was easier being a carbed 350 but the thought of wires and Bla Bla Bla. I just came to terms with my abilities and paid a shop to finish it off...

Hopefully being here we can get it running. It's just a slow process. Asking the question, waiting for replies. Then trying to figure out what you're being told to do etc etc.

Be patient and take pictures.
