I'm almost out of room in my current bottom and top box setup. So I need a bigger bottom box. Thinking somewhere between 45 and 54 inches wide. Damn some of the boxes are spendy though. The nice thing is at my shop we don't move our boxes. The boss supplies a cart to haul tools so the boxes are kept out of the way. Matco shot me a nice price on a box for 3100 (lists for 5900) his is truck worn and has a couple of scratches. Snap on is way out of my budget....damn

Keep a look on craigslist if you have cash in hand. I have been seeing more and more here locally for sale.

What are you really looking for? What box was the Matco quote on? Cannot say I'd ever knock THAT much off for truck wear. If he is, its a hell of a deal.

Been watching craigslist. Some of these people are nuts on the prices.

Tell me about it. If someone is selling it private its because they didn't like what they were quoted in trade, and they likely didn't like what they were offered because they are off their rockers :haha: Or they are just out of it and want the money. IMO the first situation is the more likely one.

I have a guy who I just sold a top box for his bottom he has had for years. I didn't even try to sell him a new bottom, because he said the Mac guy offered him $6k for his box and that wasn't enough.... I could sell him the exact same box he has brand new for $6500.... So yea, no way I'd trade a 5 year old box at new price.

One guy in this area has a mac or matco that is 6 months old and he wants almost new price for. Why he doesn't want it anymore is not my concern, (screw loose comes to mind) what he wants for it is nuts though.

Price out a Classic 96 from Snap On, it's about 72" long and actually pretty reasonable cost.

Unfortunately quality tool box's retain their resale value. You can buy a name brand tool box today and turn it in on a new one years later and they'll still give you big $$$ for the old one. At least around here they do. Maybe other parts of the country are different though.

They hold their value if taken care of. Lots of guys do not take care of them that way though. When we start talking a 5 year old box, if it looks brand new, yea I would give a really good trade value, but not new price.

Matco 4 series boxes are very reasonably priced, and great boxes for the entry level technician. Even for an experience tech they can be a great box.

I know from talking to the dealers that come into the shop I work at they usually offer about 30~40 cents on the purchase price or value of the box. What most of them seem to do is post pictures in the truck and offer to mention it people and help the owner sell. The strange thing is there doesn't seem to be as much used stuff floating around as there used to be.

Wish I could afford to be so good to my customers. Or had the relationship to trust them like that(of course I'm a month in).

this guy has only known me for 2wks...... but when he first met me he watched me rebuild a rear end and so he knowns ima be in it for a while..... hell he thought i was mid 20s lol he got me an extra 2K approved and hes loading me a 3yr old snap-on dual bay 54" roll cab... im gonna buy one almost like it or i might just buy a triple bay 72"....... also hes letting me trade in my roll cart to make it match my box no charge.

Sounds like the Snap-On guy I had when I started. If you discussed boxes with him, the next day he'd stop by with a brand new box, drop it off "let you get the feel for it". From what I hear, few guys didn't buy.

Like I said, would be nice if I could do it...
