me and my wife recently came into possesion of a 1990 GMC Suburban R1500 SLE because someone was dumb enough to pay for junk yard dodge neon :D, and we were lucky enough to find our suburban for $2000  now obviously its not the prettiest thing but at the time it was safer than the neon (as we have 2yr daughter) but now time went on and we got another car and blah blah blah and the world of Suburbans opened up to me but my question is.....

where do i get started with it i mean i live in south Texas i want it to be able to go through 5ft water if needed and on the beaches and mud just all around really....so anything to push me in the right direction would be so very greatly appreciated. :D

You are in the right place. There are alot of options and upgrades for our rigs. You will want to check out DIY4X and Offroad Design. The best money you can spend now is on a membership. It allows you to see what others have done to there rigs and how they turned out.

thats what im leaning towards, but its my daughters birthday this weekend so there goes about i dont even know how much money yet, i just wanna get a game plan going:D

Its definitely all about the membership. This board has a ton of info! Congrats on the burb!

and humble members too!

Congrats on the rig....get ready to dump money in a pit, cause this modifying stuff gets addictive, and expensive.

Happy Bday to your princess.

yeah thats what i figured, but I'm 19 make around $500 to $600 a week bills are paied and everyone is happy.
so instead of countless trips to the mall on my girls behalf.
time to put money where itll do some damn good.

but like thats what im getting at, is if I'm going to get a 6" lift on it whats all the pros and conns and strings attatched and ballpark figures im looking at.

Ok I always suggest the same amount of lift to everyone lol. 4in front springs ( as tempting as it may be once you start looking at pictures I would advise you to NOT do 52in rears up front being a family DD) with a shackle flip in the rear. Probably want to get yourself a zero rate (1in lift) for the rear since we're talking a burb.

Lift height is not gonna make you safe from water. Proper sealing and prep is what makes you able to take on water well.

Before we go any further, what size tires were you planning on fitting with a 6" lift and are you willing to cut the fenders to fit tires?

and im willing to do just about everything it takes.
ill have pictures up hopefully tomo.

Ok so 35's then, right those are 35's lol? I'm not good with metric.

If your will to trim 4in will do it for 35's. The whole going through 5ft water thing is a totally separate beast from your lift and tires. Try not to think that your truck not being tall enough to have the cab out of the water is gonna stop you from going through it dry and safe.

and yes those are 35's
the 5ft water thing was thrown in for flavour :D
i just dont like being the one stuck in storms, because of some water thats a couple feet high you know what i mean?
because we just started hurricane season down here.
i just need the all around american MAN vehicle on a budget.

4 inch lift up front, bds, tuff country or another soft ride spring, then a zerro rate under it. In the rear shackle flip it with a zero rate as suggested . est 180-250.00 for a pair

u-bolts.. 10.00 to 18.00 each.. you should only need them for the front if you just shackle flip the rear..with a zero rate out back you may need them there too. up to 8 needed

To get by on shocks if your working on a budget superduty rear shocks are cheap/ free from some off road shops or you can get the gabrial part number and look them up at your local parts store. Est 20-35.00 per shock.

brake lines..try to relocate them down, if not your local circle track or hot rod shop should have what you need for about 1/2 the cost of the superlift ones or procomps online est 50-70.00 or 120 for the procomps or supers

steering.. ideally you should do a steering brace from ord and support 65.00 and 80 ish for the other or around that price.. They are weak from the factory in this area and need the support with some larger tires and wheeling. Cross over will help you out in this department but a raised steering arm "40.00-70.00 should get you going till then.

driveline.. should work fine, but you may get some vibes witht he new angles from the lift and could end up eating u-joints. a balanced and reworked d-shaft can run 80- 175.00 each depending on the shop.

I would parts gather and use this site and craigslist to get some deals.

With that size tire and 6 inches it might look a little small but sounds like they are hummer take offs? If so and the price is right i would run them!

I'd recommend you not cheap out on shocks. I killed those gabriels in like 6months.

for the superduty application? I have 3 or 4 friends that have been getting used ones from a shop for the last few years and love them. They are easily just as good or better than a rancho 5000 and the name sure cost less.

Those fit with a 4" lift

I'm running Hankook Dynapro MT's in the 315/75r16 flavor.. love them. I also have a 4" lift, with a block in the rear. Haven't figured out how I want to set up the rear suspension, but right now it sags a bit. Thinking shackle flip plus a zero rate or 2" block depending on how much it needs..

I took mine out onto the beach for the first time on Monday and had a blast. Definitely need better gears and some more power to spin the wheels though.

now you guys are rubbing it in my face. :eek1:
like damn those are nice all of them.
so how much was like the whole entire deal like...
lift kit, wheels, tires, and anything else ill need?

Scrounge! Check craigslist every day. Check scrap yards. Spend time collecting parts when you have the cash. The best thing about these is that they are somewhat inexpensive compared to newer vehicles.
