Hi guys!
I need your advice. I live in Ukraine. It has long dreamed of an American truck and just recently I changed my Range Rover on CUCV M1009 1986 V8 6.2l D TH400 NP208. :D Now I am engaged in the restructuring of my K5. Replaced with a axles GM from a Russian military truck GAZ-66 axles tires 12R18 (42") gear ratio 6.83. Must change transfer case because now the front axle gearbox is on the left side. I also want to get good speed on the road 65-75 mph. T-case TH 400 is not overdrive in this to look how to solve this problem. Is possible to change the gear ratio of - 6,17; 5,5; 4,56. It may be possible to solve this problem installing the overdrive? And what the normal engine RPM at cruise speed for the engine 6.2L D ? Plan to use my truck for trips to hunting, fishing where many will have to go in the woods, mud, sand and on-road.
My question is:
- What a powerful transfer case you suggest?
- What gear is better put in the axle?
- How to resolve the issue with overdrive?
- What maximum engine RPM 6.2l D while driving on-roads?
Thank you for your assistance and look forward to your responses.

A good transfer case to use would be an np241 from a 1 ton chevy from 88-99, because it will have the right spline count to bolt up to your transmission, and also has the output for the front axle on the driver side like you need. A good transmission to have an overdrive gear would be either an nv4500, or a 4l80e transmission. They are both very tough transmissions and will hold up to a lot of abuse. The maximum rpm for the 6.2 is around 3600 rpm. Although I have been told that the motor will really scream when revved that high. I personally wouldn't go any higher than 3200 rpm with a 6.2. Good luck with your truck.

Welcome Zerg! This is truelly a global board. You will get some great advise around here from guys who have done it all with these trucks. Post some pictures when you get a chance.

Best to you,
Keith

I believe optimal cruise on a 6.2 is 1600-2000rpms but I could be mistaken. You find your self in a wee bit of a catch 22. The 6.2 while it is a good motor is no power house. Which makes the 6.83 gearing a good thing but at the same time limits top speed.

If you have the rupees (hehehe) I would look into either a double overdrive T56 which will give you a .50 final gear ratio I believe or take your choice of Nv4500, nv5600, 4L80e and get a ranger gear splitter.

How high are you lifting this thing anyway? Generally speaking its not a good idea to go blasting down the highway at 80mph with military axles and tires that are probably not rated over 55.

Thank you very much guys for your advice and information. Change the gear box on the Nv4500, nv5600 or 4L80 do not want to yet, because in the first case is necessary to replace pedal unit and some adapters, and the second 4L80 E-box and need to connect the computer, but we do not know how to do it and what you need to do so. TH400 is a very powerful and reliable t-case, I know, and I have already put enhanced Kit for her. We still have a little American pickups and hard to find parts, and I need to order all of the United States. But we in Ukraine and Russia are known and loved American cars for their comfort and reliability of the old GM  When I decided to install the big tires on my K5 is faced with the problem of searching the required donor to replace the axles. Then I decided to use parts from the Soviet army truck GAZ-66 - V8 engine 2 ton 42"x12"R18 (or 51"x20"R21) front and rear axle gear with locking differential of the same slip and automatic regulation of pressure in the tires. I think the change in the ring gear of 5,5 in axle. At 60 MPH -engine RPM is 2640, is normal? What do you think about the Stak transfer case and Dual Range ® Auxiliary Transmissions OVERDRIVE?
Sorry for my English :doah:

you need to have posted at least 10 posts i think. is it 10 or 20? just keep posting meaningless words 20 times or until it lets you insert pics. then go advanced where it says post quick reply and you will be allowed to post them. or just simply buy a membership

Cool

As an alternative for me - What do you think about the Stak transfer case and Dual Range ® Auxiliary Transmissions OVERDRIVE?

I am unsure about the dual range aux overdrive, but the Stak won't help your overdrive problem as it only reduces your overall gearing. I know there are companies that make overdrive units that bolt on which may be your best option if you want to keep the TH 400.

Yes, I want to keep the TH 400. Tell me please about these companies and what they do.

I forget, can the Ranger box be bolted to a TH400?

I've read the GV unit isn't all it's cracked up to be for 4x4's.

I read about Gear Vendors , they have good advertising and I think it is powerful enough as box is, after transfer case, but the length ...? I think it is too long and not become a base K5.

I honestly couldn't tell you, neither truck has a tach.

However Big Ugly has 4.56 gears, 38's, a TH400, and no sound deadening and if I go above 70mph it sounds like the engine wants to come through the firewall and beat me to death.
