I really dig RockAuto.com.

So I may be the odd man out and I do get a discount at a couple of local places.

I tend to buy local. My car quest can have just about anything in 2 days.

I have ordered from rock auto before and its been good but I typically still go to a parts store

My issue is I live in the section of my city with no parts stores. So to get to either of my favorite NAPA's it's a 15 minute or more drive through traffic just to order the part that they may or may not even have. The other stores around are staffed by mook's 90% of the time so I avoid them like the plague.
Still, I get my filters at NAPA and if I ever need something last minute I'll drive across town if need be. Doesn't matter who it is then, just need the part.

When I lived up in Northern Michigan it was ALWAYS cheaper to get parts from RockAuto and often to the point where I could buy a nicer/higher quality part for the same or less than the local places wanted for generic stuff. Put KYB shocks and struts on a SUV I used to own for less than even the NAPA that gave me a discount would do for the NAPA brand stuff.

One thing I will say is I have Amazon Prime so I get 2 day shipping for free. I'll usually take the part number and name from RockAuto and see if anyone has them on Amazon. Been able to get a few deals that way. Ordered a cat-back exhaust for my Tracker last March. It's a 1 piece unit about 5' long with a big bend up and over for the rear axle along with a muffler and silencer. Not light or small. RockAuto had the best price from the parts stores but shipping was going to be like $30.
Found it on Amazon for a few bucks more to purchase but with the free shipping I had it in 2 days and saved ~$25.

I suppose things have changed since this thread was last active 3.5 years ago.

IMO, they have gotten worse. Rock Auto is now shipping everything from different warehouses so there is rarely combined shipping - you pay double, triple, quad shipping depending on how many parts you need. I just went to order qty (2) of something and they showed them shipping from 2 different locations. $14 parts with $10 shipping + $11 shipping for over $50 total. So I got them for $18 on Amazon with free shipping.

I have emailed with a guy at rockauto.com a few times complaining about this. He claims that the shipping charges are "actuals" from the shippers (I suggested that they profit from shipping/handling charges) and that their emphasis is on getting the parts out quickly over affordable shipping. IMO, there is no RockAuto if their total prices aren't lower than local. I keep suggesting an option to wait a couple days longer - so they can move parts between their warehouses and ship one package. IMO, if you need it right away, shipping isn't much of an option anyway. In fairness, they do ship really fast.

Agreed, I don't order stuff from them nearly as much as I use to.

I share the same thoughts. Was kinda cool at first and now I pretty much exclusively use them as a catalog to find part numbers and then shop on amazon/eBay.

Here is a perfect example of right now, today. I need a set of front calipers for my recently aquierd 77 crew cab. Advanced auto parts has free shiping over $75 and has a near permanent discount of around 15%. Through advanced, the calipers are $20ea+$10 core. so $60. Add a few more things that i need anyway and after the discount, im just over the $75 limit to get free shipping.

Rockauto wants $16.76 for the calipers with a $20 core. Total with shipping is $86.47...

Many of the parts stores here, including NAPA,Autozone,Advanced Auto, and "jobbers" all order parts from Rock Auto and mark them up drastically,if none of their local suppliers have the part in stock..

I have never bought anything from Rock auto, but have been tempted too often--especially when they have "close outs" and "only 2 left, etc,on parts like wheel cylinders, that you can but for like 2-4 dollars..but by the time you pay the shipping, the ones down the street at Autozone for 9.99 are no more expensive!...

Rock Auto's main advantage is they kept a lot of parts all the other stores sent back for credit, and they bought up some old dealers stock,so they'll have a part no one else lists any more..

A friend of mine has customers who buy their parts from Rock Auto and he hates that, because he gets screwed out of the money he could make off the parts..some of the customers have had bad experiences with them too, like one guy who ordered a gas tank for a square body truck, and wanted a 20 gallon one--and paid for it--and a 16 gallon one was shipped instead, which was about 20 bucks less,,

--he called to complain, they told him "well, that tank WILL work, and that's all we had in stock ,so we sent it--if you want the 20 gallon one that is "back ordered" you can send the tank back--at his expense, even though it was "their fault"..--they were not willing to give him the 20 bucks "extra" either--he spent a couple days on the phone with them and they finally agreed to refund his 20 bucks--ended up installing the tank,he needed his truck for work, couldn't tie it up any longer..he was pretty disgusted when he found out the "right" tank from a local parts store was only 5 bucks more, and they had one on the shelf!..

I have never ordered from them but I've looked around their site a few times. IMO their website sucks and with shipping I haven't found anything yet that I couldn't get cheaper elsewhere.

I did have a chuckle reading through this thread though before I realized how old it was. Reading guys talking about being scared to use their credit card online and using dial up internet was a real blast from the past. LOL

I'm kinda here. I used to use rock auto all the time, but it seems like lately I get the best results by just using it to find parts numbers to then find on Amazon.

That said, I just got rid of my last Suzuki and RockAuto was good for finding specific parts for those.
