I still hate ball joints

I have that exact kit! bought it a few years ago to help with U-joint replacement (works great for that by the way).

If you have the balljoint press use it to remove the ball joints from the axle ????:doah:

& as far as the preload sleeve I have done a gazillion balljoints & have only ever had to replace one of those & that was because someone else had been in there before &
messed it up.
Now I run a Dana 60 , no more balljoints for my ride :woot:

Again use the balljoint press , that's what it is made for :thumb:

The ball joint press is for removing the ball joints from the knuckle AFTER the knuckle is off the axle.

wwhat he said:waytogo:.cant really get the press in there to push the top joint off as its press fit.gotta get the knuckle off first then press out the joint.ive done it twice and used the method stated above.took a good few whacks but it came off with a 5 pound mini sledge.

I dont understand the problem lol. Loosen the nuts, hit the knuckle/balljoint and the knuckle WILL come off the balljoints. If it doesnt your not hitting it hard enough.

Be advised I've had those damn sleeves break and ear on me so use lots of PB and get the impact version of the socket from napa and use an impact gun.

I did use the press on a vehicle once. The ball-joints were so rusted into this (cursed TTB) axle that we had to tag-team the pickle forks with a 10lb sledge for 20 minutes. When the knuckle came off, the studs were still in it and the ball-joint casings were still in the axle "C". After staring at it for a minute I remembered we had rented the press...

With the amount of surface rust, I was surprised at how clean & new looking the insides were, as well as how easy the spindle, and ball joint & tie rod nuts came off.

At this point, I'm going to drive it for a while longer... we have reservations in South Lake Tahoe next weekend, and the one joint isn't really that bad yet. Hopefully when my new front springs come, I'll have some help with the beating of the axle to get the knuckle off :)

Thanks,
Clay

Digging this thread up since it's not too old...

Trying to the the knuckles off my 91 10b front... knuckles, tie rod, & steering arm going direct to the scrap yard :D And of course they won't budge. Searching thru various threads, I'm a little confused here... do I need that little preload spanner socket to remove the knuckles (I'm not actually removing the ball joints)? Tried whacking the upper ball joint stud, lower ball joint stud, and the sides of the C's where they go thru, thing ain't moving. Biggest hammer I've got a available is just a lil 4 pounder on a short handle. Gonna stop by Harbor Freight tomorrow and pick up a proper BFH. Am I missing anything here?

I didn't use a hammer, but my manual had a diagram on how to make a small press out of a 2-3" bolt, nut, washer, and a deep socket. It worked fine for pressing the lower balljoint out while the knuckle was still attached. Then the knuckle came off easy.

I think it was 1/2" bolt with the nut threaded on all the way. Then you add a washer and the drive end of the socket over the threads of the bolt. Then you insert that thing in between both balljoints and start unscrewing the nut on the bolt so the socket starts pressing the lower ball joint out. I can take a picture of the manual page, but it wasn't anything special.

OK, so bigger hammer did NOT work. Whacked it as hard as I dare with an 8lb sledge & got nuthin. My axle is off the truck too. So...

Can someone please fill me in on if I need to remove those preload thingies before the knuckles will come off?? :dunno:
