So when I got off work tonight.. 11pm here my blazer was dead as a doornail. Checked and I had, had a worn altenator belt and sometime on the way to work it must have snapped. So I had a co-worker give me a jump and let the battery get up to about 13volts then started the 22 mile journey home...

About 2 miles into it my battery dropped to 8 volts and my blinkers stopped working and my gauge lights went out, My headlights were about as bright as a candle and I couldn't see my brake lights when I applied breakage.

Everything was fine the rest of the way as I limped it 20 more miles until I started to cross the median into my neighborhood... Then it started whinning and pissing and moaning like the power steering was dry ( it had been about 3 weeks ago and I refilled it: no leak)

I just figured this was cause by the battery about to die.. So I moan and groan it to my drive way when I start to smell something burning but it goes off and on as I pull it into my shop.

I parked it and saw there were 2 little drops of some kind of liquid underneath it. Said fock it I'm too tired to mess with this, and I'm just gonna get mad.

So now I want your oppinons... WTF happened?

I didn't even look. I'm pretty tired and I dont want to get pissed off.. I'll take some pics tomorrow I suppose when I inspect it further..

Can running with low to no battery damage anything? would it affect power steering?

If the alternator belt wasn't on...chances are the water pump wasn't turning...same belt on that year I think.

Edit:You may have overheated it, and antifreeze was boiling over.

Most vehicles that run V belts the alternator belt is what drives the water pump. Some vehicles have two belts that drive the water pump though. If yours is only driven by the belt that broke and you drove that truck without a water pump you have probably toasted the engine since it would have run extremely hot. I also have no idea how far you had to drive so that will also make a difference but probably not since i'm sure you had more than a couple miles to go and without a water pump it would have gotten hot very quickly.

As far as running without an alternator that won't hurt a thing other than make the battery dead since it isn't charging.

Some more details are required to give a better assesment on your situation.

Your volts should have been higher then 8 even without the alternator. If the belts are fine I'd get the battery checked out... unless you have a VERY high draw system.

Did you miss the part about his belt broke and is missing?

1 yes his head lights were on
2.I would open the hood and check to see if the broke alt belt also turned your water pump if it did and you drove your truck 22 miles with out a water pump you deff overheated the engine . I personally carry spare belts with me for that suprise broken belt .
Keeping up on maintence you would never have that prolbem .I always do a 30 point check list on my oilchanges if it needs it I do it

Not trying to bitch at you but this could have been avoided

Its REALLY hard to help ya out without you wanting to open your hood and look for a leak. It could be coolant out your cap=not good, coolant out your exuast flange=really bad but very likely if you over heated the BEAST.

Wait on a v-belt setup you have 2 belts running over the water pump pulley. Take away one, it still spins. I had to run without an alternator belt once and I never overheated.

Some do have a double belt on the water pump, but not all of them.

I dont have a camera with me at the moment. But its been over 12 hours and nothing is leaking anymore.. there is just about 4 drops underneath. As soon as I can get a camera I'll post some pics..

Both look to be like antifreeze leaks :doah:

I don't see why it'd get hot with the other belt driving the waterpump though. :dunno:

I say buy a new belt and start her up. No leaks = no problems. :D

It was moaning because that belt isn't enough to move the water pump and the steeing pump so it was slipping under pressure, I'd say you got off easy, just replace both belts because you overworked this one too, and check your fluids and hopefully you are ok with only maybe having to replace the battery down the road if you killed it bad..

Wow that is a filthy engine compartment. How can you tell anything looking in there?
