So what's out there that's available and reliable for us 6.2L owners?

I know we can't just buy a $30 tach at AutoZone and bolt it on.

Well if you have been reading the posts lately there is block off plate/ oil pump shaft with a signal pickup you can install if you don't need vacuum, you add a signal modifier circuit and you can install that $30 tach you talked about.
The other options I have are tiny tach which is a small electronic tach with a signal pickup that bolts to a fuel injector line I bought mine for $65 plus shipping, and I have an alternator with a magnetic pickup strapped on it for an tach, haven't tried that one yet but I have it.

I have cruise and it works, would like to keep it. I believe that's vacuum controlled. Anything else on these? Brakes or anything?

Could you go into more detail on the tiny tach? Is that a product name?

That seems almost too easy. Also simplifies my "WhereTF to put a tach" quandaries.

Which size transducer would our 6.2's need?

I think it's the 1/4".
I got the wrong one at first so I ordered another transducer but I was putting it on the perkins and that was not the 1/4"
Anyway I looked at it later you can resize the transducer like you resize rods:D

Never resized a rod. How does one do that?

They grind the flat mating surface and then bore the rod bearing whole again, in this case you only need to grind the mating surface since it just needs to be tight on the fuel line to get the pulse from the injection pressure.
I will go see if I can find them and take a pic so you see how it is.

Did you have any luck installing a tach. I was looking at the tiny tachs today. I would really like to pick one up since I am now running a 4 speed.

I put this in my Suburban and then also just put it in my blazer a few weeks ago. Autometer mini tach.....

I didn't put my tinytach on my truck yet, but I put one on my buddies 6.2 and it works great, it not only does instant RPM reading but also saves some info like highest RPM and average RPM.

Do you purchase the 1/4 inch attachment for the fuel line seperate or is it included?

when you order the tach you need to specify what size, and it's included, but I made the wrong choice so I had to buy another one.
So now I can use mine on both different engines that I have, and the tach being only 2 wires, it's easy to make it removeable and having the tach attached with hook and loop.

Yes, I know the topic was a diesel tach......just wanted to add to the "tach" part and the location. And this was also a 2010 thread.
Oh I know, I put a tach on my Van in the same location, where there is a blank circle.:thumb:

So Jeff your tach is on a diesel? Thanks for posting up how you mounted it. It fits well in your dash. Unfortunately my truck already has all four of those holes filled with other instrumentation. I am considering locating it above the heater controls in the useless square box area.

I realize it is a 2010 thread, but I know the guys who started it are avid members and would be able to respond constructively.

Thanks Iceman, I'm going to order that up and give it a go.

No, mine is on a gas engine. I've done this install 3 or 4 times now in the same location and it's worked out pretty good. I have no idea about diesels or where you even hook up the tach lead but according to summit, they do make "diesel specific" tachs that are the same size as my gasser.

I had the tach in there from many years ago and then I just recently swapped over from cable speedo to electronic speedo. And that required a whole new cluster. After driving around for about 3 weeks with no tach, it drove me nuts so "a hacking away" I went. The backside of the cluster is gone with a large hole in the back but it sits flush against the gauge bezel so it looks "close to factory".
