I want a tach.

No, mine is on a gas engine. I've done this install 3 or 4 times now in the same location and it's worked out pretty good. I have no idea about diesels or where you even hook up the tach lead but according to summit, they do make "diesel specific" tachs that are the same size as my gasser.

I had the tach in there from many years ago and then I just recently swapped over from cable speedo to electronic speedo. And that required a whole new cluster. After driving around for about 3 weeks with no tach, it drove me nuts so "a hacking away" I went. The backside of the cluster is gone with a large hole in the back but it sits flush against the gauge bezel so it looks "close to factory".
Yeah you don't need a diesel specific tach, you need a diesel specific sender, you can actually use that same tach, but you need the sender or the system that will send a signal to the tach.
There are 3 systems that I know that work with that:
one replaces the vacuum pump where a dizzy goes in a gas engine.
one goes on the alternator to get the pulses.
one goes at the crank.
And this one you posted has the alternator sensor. :)

I was looking at the other options and either way the $ signs seem to go up.

Ahhh, now I got it. Thanks for the explanation! :waytogo:

Did you have any luck installing a tach. I was looking at the tiny tachs today. I would really like to pick one up since I am now running a 4 speed.
Nope. Now diesel/old truck free.

Even though it was a tiny tach it was a tight squeeze with the brackets for the alt gauge. I just barely got it to fit and it really works great so far. It looks really cool at night and seems to be accurate without noticeable delay.

The tiny tach works by reading off an injector line, so four ways I guess. Just fyi.
