I wanted this so bad: I just cannot do it. EDIT: One more to ask about?

I believe 1981 was the last year you could get a 14 bolt full floater in a Suburban. All 3/4 ton Suburbans got a 14 bolt, 8 lug rear. From 1973-198x it was the 14bff. From 198x-1991 it was the less desirable 14bsf.

No Suburban ever had a front Dana 60 from the factory. Whether a 1/2 or 3/4 ton Suburban, all 4x4's from 1973-197x (I've seen some 1980's with a Dana 44) had Dana 44 front axles, and from 197x-1991 they all had 10 bolt front axles.

The only real desirable thing about that Suburban you posted was the factory SM465 with a hydraulic clutch setup and NP241 with mechanical speedometer.

No, no, I know about the info here. I meant by looking at the pictures at that auction site. Like, was there something to suggest by looking at those pictures that you'd know what it was sportin'.

but still, if i was suburban shopping, that would be a hell of a desireable feature.

Yeah. When looking at the rear wheel, with no hub cap on it, you could tell it was a semi floater because there was no hub protruding through the wheel.

I think I know what you're asking.
I used to think that all 8 lug axles were dana 60s and 14bff, so I'm guessing you were in the same boat. Unfortunately, most 8 lug front axles are just dana 44 or 10 bolts with a different hub on them to match the rear axle. I'm not sure how you would tell from the pics above on the front axle, other than knowing that no suburban ever came with a dana 60. As far as the rear goes, like 82355 said, a full floater would have the hub sticking out past the rim and you'd see the bolt heads all the way around it that bolt the axle into the hub.
 
After you get use to them, you can easily identify the front axle by the size difference of the front hubs.

Oh my! That is in immaculate and amazing condition for a 1986!! Nice D60 front axle, and either 14FF or Dana 70 in the back. 454 auto, and the TH400 will have the factory deep extra oil capacity tranny pan. This is premium GM factory beefcake stuff that you want. I have seen trucks like this with either 4.11, but more often 4.56 gears. There is probably still a tag on the diff covers to tell you what gears are in there. Wow, I still can't believe the 21k mileage and pristine body condition. This is a gem.
