I was TWICE the legal limit!

10 days. That sucks. We get 30 in AZ.

Yea, it's pretty obvious the law here is designed to help mechanics, not the vehicle owner. How do you force someone to go to a mechanic? Tell them their car has failed a test, give them a little tiny booklet that doesn't give any info about how to go about troubleshooting the problem area themselves, tell them the only way they're going to get their car fixed is by a mechanic (They have a list of "approved" mechanics), give you no further guidance as to how to figure out your problem, and then say, you have ten days!

Damn mechanic lobbyers again! :haha:Down with special interests!

wow i have that beat im glad wyoming does not have emissions laws. i ran my 86 k5 on the dyno at school and i have all the emissions stuff, but the smog pump is removed, the EGR is disconnected, the CAT is destoyed but still hooked up, and the PCV is the only thing that works. well at 2500 rpm i was making 7000 HC yes everyone thats right 7000 HC the best i ran was 3200 and that was at idle so ya i wish i could have that good of emissions, even if they are bad :wink1:

One thing -- Check your engine temp sensor, if its outta whack, and thinks its colder out than it is, it'll up the engine RPMs like you are experiencing, and richen the mixture to "choke" the engine.

Second, VSS -- Its so easy to install on these trucks for TBI, its crazy not to run one. Simply get an 83 - 86 cluster with a green optical sensor on the back of the speedometer head. Sure, you loose your fancy 100 mph tach, but how often do you go faster than 85 mph anyways? It'll be a direct bolt into your 79, no wiring changes less giving the VSS it's power, and ground, then passing the signal directly to the pin on the ECM.

Those TBI trucks use a 2000 ppm signal, which they normally get from the DRAC in the newer trucks, but that VSS on the speedometer, which is used for the cruise control stock, will operate the TBI without a hitch :)

How do I check my engine temp sensor?

My old truck was a 90 so it had a DRAC. This weekend I will be installing a speedometer from an 88 blazer...with that box on the back to send a signal to the ECM.

And I thouhgt the box on the back of the speedometer sent a 3 or 4 PPR(revoution) (?) signal to the ECM....which is what the DRAC also sends to it after it convertved the 2000PPM from the VSS on the transfer case. Again...correct me if I'm wrong.

The VSS on the back of the speedo sends a 2000 pulse per mile, or two pulse per speedometer cable rotation signal out. The signal coming from the transfer case is a 40 pulse per driveshaft revolution signal. That signal is then convertered to a crazy 29.something pulse per mile signal for the ABS, a 4000 pulse per mile signal for the electric speedometer (if so equipped), and a 2000 pulse per mile signal for both the cruise control, and the ECM.

Best way to check the temp sensor is using your winALDL cable, if not, find the resistance vs temp chart online, and compare it to your engine. All TBI / TPI CTS sensors should be the same...

Just to be clear, ALL wire cutting and splicing will be on your harness. Not mine! :shame: I'm sure you'll have to do something to hook the wiring to a different source.

Sounding like none of your ALDL numbers will do any good until you have the VSS.

Maybe you need to move to Ault. Maybe it would pass with my carb on there. :tongue1: :haha:

Sorry, nothing constructive to add here. :deal:

not sure if you got this taken care of, but it sounds like a vacuum leak, good possibility that the brake booster is the root cause.

Nick runs Hydroboost, so a vacuum leak in the brake booster is not the cause. Good luck Nick and let me know if there is anything I can do to help.
