I wrapped my truck with camo

Nice! I like it. I tell peoole all the time they can do their own wraps.

Looks great! I wonder how well the vinyl wrap will hold up to the colder weather I experience up north? How much does it run to cover an entire k5?

Sweet! Nice job. I've been thinking of getting mine done cuz it's way cheaper than a paint job.

What are the chances of it causing rust underneath?

I've seen some large sheets of vinyl on ebay that would make it affordable, probably between 400 to 600 like Merrick mentioned. I have seen some 5 x 10 foot sheets for around 38 bucks and if you did it right you can do each side of the truck with about 4 or 5 per side, then one for the hood, and maybe if you cut it right you can finish the tailgate with some of the leftover. I could use a Tailor's tape and figure out the cuts and total quantity exactly but I'm so far away from worrying about the outside of the truck I have not made a priority out of that. Only thing that will be a real pickle is the cowl behind the hood but even that with a little practice can be done easily enough with a razor knife and propane torche. I'm thinking of doing mine in a brushed aluminum finish and then blacking out all the chrome garbage... The nice thing about the square bodies is it's basically a brick. I think the top will be a bit of a challenge but I was just going to make the cab be one piece that runs down and divides at the joint lines.

Here is a link to that material I found. I bought a large piece in black brushed finish to test out on a motorcycle tank but I have been to busy with the truck to even tackle that, lol.

I did a lot of prep on the body before. I had already sanded it all down and primered it about 6 months ago. I then sanded it again and wet sanded this time fixed with bondo any cracks etc and then clear coated the bondo. Then one more wet sand pass. It was smooth as glass.

The wrap is pretty easy to put on because of the shape of the truck, but I also was getting my technique down towards the end and using the right amount of heat and tension to get it to lay flat. Don't use propane. That is too hot. Honestly working in the sun on the last day was almost too much on my black truck. Once the material stretches beyond its elastic point you end up with stretch marks that you can't get out.

I would stick with a name brand for the material. I got mine from metrorestyling.com and it is a 3M wrap. They say it is good for about 5 years at least. We shall see....

My K5 is about 5 different colors... Aesthetics are the last thing on my list lol but I find the wrap idea interesting, I don't know how it would hold up getting scraped against things though, seems like a tree branch might leave a nice scar in the vinyl.

Yea that remains to be seen. I still have a lot of scrap left and cutting out a scratch and replacing is very easy.

Seems like this day would never come. The body was the last thing I thought I would deal with. And here I am. Pretty cool feeling

I never thought about cutting and old piece out and replacing it... that's pretty neat.

With the camo pattern if you patched it you probably wouldn't even be able to tell.

Yeah, I view my truck, once done, as mostly a parking lot princess, lol. I'm sure I'll run across some circumstance where I'll be throwing it in 4wd to get across some obstacle or other kind of muddy obstruction but my plans for it never included anything aside from being a replacement for a truck that is costing me about 700 dollars a month to drive not counting fuel. Right now the bodywork is a combination of surface rust, body filler, and worse rust, along with what looks like a well intentioned share of rattle can, so like others, I am more worried about setting up the power train for reliability and I'll probably never really paint it, unless it's to just make something shiny dark colored or not shiny. I have a large swatch of that vinyl in the black color for a project bike and probably over the next month will get it applied. I figure that is going to give me a good reference point on how well it will hold up to rubbing and daily use once I get it back on the bike.

Man, I hate camo, when I saw this thread I thought "oh god - let's see what this looks like."

Let me tell you, that looks fantastic. The only camo I like is digital camo. You nailed the colors and look perfectly.

It looks like you didn't do the top of the cab?
Maybe paint that a grey color from the camo print for a little contrast?

Nice work.

I do have to admit after seeing the video the upside of the digital camo is that even if you do mess up in spots, how in the world could you tell, lol...

yea it was weird to step back after it was done and it suddenly lost like 20 years in age. I have had this truck since high school (I graduated in 94) so it has been around a while. This is the newest it has ever looked. Lol.

And seriously, you can't see any lines unless you get close. I wanted to pass the 5 foot test, I pass the 2 foot test honestly.

Now if it holds up all the better. Over on PBB I posted this and had a guy comment that he has had his wrap on for 9 years and has yet to scratch or tear it. The material is damn tough.
