Any ideas on how I can extend the power steering reservoir? I have a ram assist and need more fluid.

I had a pice of coolant hose clamped to the top of the reservoir and put a cap on it, but it was not very secure.

Thanks for any input.

you take this boot and trim it a little bit and clamp it to the ps pump. then it has a 3/4 inch top part which is the same size as a stock GM resivoir. i found mine from a chevy van 80s vintage. no BBCs at the yards. ran a 3/4 hose from pump to resi and mounted it to the alternator bracket. easy cheesy. this combined with your fluid cooler will give you plenty of fluid.

my coolant extention hose thing didnt work to good because i still have a/c and the hose rubbed on the bracket with vibrations and eventually would fall off.

ahhh, I will still have my AC too. Hmmm anyone have a PN for the reservoir? I looked through vans and 1ton BB trucks, in Rockauto.

i looked on my resi and there was no noticeable part number on the can. cant help you there. its just a junkyard thing.

you can do an 1984 k30 dually 454 auto a/c and see if a resi comes up. the one on my dually has a way better mount on the side than the one off the van i pulled.

mine is simply a 1.5" pipe from lowes w/ the threaded cap/end of pipe and connecting the 2 is a 4" long piece of rad. hose w/ clamps on both the pump and the tubing then i used exhaust clamp to hold a brace to the engine block so it doesnt flop over. ill show pics in the morning.

Astro/Safari vans after 89 had remote resevoirs mounted to the top of the firewall. Single hose outlet to the pump, two bolt mounting. If you have a remote pump setup it would be pretty easy to set this up on a K truck. I have one from my 92 that I will be using with a hydroboost setup on Krusty.

yep vans have remote style pump resivors and come vac brakes or hydro boost. so you can have 2 or 3 hose pumps for hydro boost.

thay swap right in to trucks and on serp belt brackets just fine.

look for an 89-97 240sx in the junkyard. Maybe even the ka24(d)e equipped nissan hardbody trucks. Very nice metal PS reserviour

I was just about to post my info until I seen that you covered it for me. Only thing is there is no trimming involved. This is a plug and play boot. Just need a piece of 3/4" metal pipe to connect the boot to a 3/4" hydraulic fluid hose (i used an old valve cover clean air breather pipe since it had little flares on each end to help keep the hose attached properly).

V6 Montero's/Dodge Raiders have a remote resevoir. As do Conquests and Starions. Thats what I used on my truck, since I had a few laying around.:D

With my hydro assist i just put a cooler in line on the low pressure side and have no issues with needing more fluid. no neck extensions or anything. also insures i dont overheat the system.

that's a good idea, it would have to be a big cooler to hold the extra needed though right?

My '85 K-10 Suburban with a 6.2 diesel has an external resiviour for the P/S pump--looks similar if not identical to the one I have off an '86 G-10 van I took the 305 out of to use in my '79 Bonanza C-10 back before I sold it..

I once put a Saginaw GM P/S pump on my 74 GMC plow truck,to power the plow cylinders after the Fisher pump crapped out one night during a storm..it worked, but lacked enough fluid capacity.--in a bind,I looked for anything I could use as a larger tank, and I saw a plastic gas tank off a Tecumseh engine I had off ,and I flipped it upside down, and joined the gas filler cap spout and the top of the P/S pump together with a hunk of radiator hose--the other end of the tank (used tp be the bottom, was now facing UP!),had a rubber grommet thing to hold a fuel line barbed nipple thing,I popped that out and screwed in a 1/4" NPT plug,it fit perfect..I had to bore a 1/16" hole in the pipe plug for a vent though..it looked goofy as hell, but it worked well, and thats all I cared about in the middle of a 18" snowstorm!..

Later on,I learned the "guts" from the Saginaw P/S pumps are identical to the one Fisher used on the "log" style plow pumps, and I simply swapped one of my spare GM pumps into the Fisher plow pump housing!..(Only can be done on the early ones that were removeable--later ones had the "log" brazed together, and were "disposeable")..
So,if you have an old snow plow pump hanging around, maybe that can be used on power steering as well,I dont see why not!..

Where do you get that rubber piece? What is it called?
Does the one end fit on the stock res. style like this one?

The source was posted with the pic, it's a Chrysler part, but it's been discontinued. Your best bet is to find a used one, mini van I think.

The lower, big end fits the stock pump neck.
