by this i mean 52in springs up front, with requisite mount modifications, and a home made shackle flip out back, which from what ive read is a 4in all around lift.

Now, ive also read that the 52's up front yeild excellent articulation, so by next, im asking what shocks should i use all around? there was an article on here about using the shocks from a super duty application. what kind of range am i looking for, 14in sweep?

also, im already aware for any offroading ill need to eventually do a crossover steering setup, longer brake lines, and such at least on the front end.

You will have to do the crissover at the same time since the stick steering won't work.
For a shock when you do the swap just flex it and measure the travel then call a place like summit and they will get a shock that works.

First thing you must know if you don't plan on using this rig for mostly offroad you'll have piles of body roll and make it pretty hard for average street driving. Second off it's incorrect that your stock steering wont work. it will with some minor modifications. It is not reccommended however it will work. The cost associated with the mods you may as well check for crossover. Perhaps try ballistic or of course ORD.

Super duty shocks from an 02 ford F350 4x4 7.3L Diesel truck will work. The lower bushing you'll need to drill out with I believe half inch size. I'd say just cut out the metal on the very inside of bushing and you'll be great. I just did a 14 b FF swap on the rear of my burb drilled out the inside and they work perfect. Great ride and everything.

For your home made shackle flip I would suggest investing in some strong shackles from somewhere just so you have no problems. Hope this helps you.

You may be able to get the stock steering to work but you pretty much have to go to crossover because of the flex. I haven't dine the swap but that's what I have heard and read

pretty much exactly right. He was asking about before he takes it serious offroading. The simple thing is that you are limiting yourself completely offroad with stock steering. Any advantages the 52" springs will be lost unless you go crossover.

I'm also sorry I don't recall the compressed length but as I recall the extended length is 28". I'll check my spare set in an hour or two and let ya know length at shortest (at least as short as I can make it)

You will also need to get some Ford shock towers either from the old F-150's or a Super Duty as the stock mounts up front are not going to work with long shocks. Then as mentioned above call Summit and buy some shocks. I run the 15" travel Pro-Comps. The rear mounts work for me because I only have about 4" or so of uptravel. I do recommend spending the money on good shocks if this is driven on the street though. The guys that run Quality shocks report much better road manners. If it's just for off road then get some cheapo's.

Towers
Shocks
Brake lines
crossover steering
long slip driveshaft

Check the Build link in my sig. I have a bunch of pictures of my shock mounting with my 52 swap.

The driveshaft is the only PITA IMO

Either drop a few hundred for one made or make your own

thanks all for all the tips. Ill definatly look into the threads that are hyperlinked.

MTBLAZER89 - first ive read about the shock towers, how much of a PITA are those to install? would different shocks allow me to keep the mounts i currently have?

Also, while the truck has been retired from daily driving duty, it will still need to be safe on paved roads. granted i dont plan on driving it like a ferrari, but the truck is my hauler, i would need to drive on highways, be street legal, and because i live near the city, drive to and from the trails i play at. Does that mean i shouldnt do the 52" springs up front? I think my shocks are shot as is, as the truck is pretty bouncy, but id hate to make it worse.

anyone suggest other brands of shocks?? edelbrock IAV etc. etc.
