If I had to start all over , I would want a clean , gorgeous , beautiful , unmolested by myself , 1983 B;azer . With Silverado package , chrome , lifted , rims and tires , and huge speakers .

Because if I started over the Blazer would not see a trail . I would buy a wittle itty bitty S-10 beater pickup with a 4.3 , and strip the motor for a tube buggy .

If I had to start over, I would start over with another 80 Blazer Silverado. First year of Silverado, last year of the full hood, last year of the 205, unique grille not found on any other K5. I wouldn't mind a first gen, but the 80 is the next best thing for me.

I wouldn't give up the fuel injection alone over any other component available! I like the idea of the 205 being strong, but the low range is just not acceptable to me (Isn't it like 1.96:1 or something?). I love having the low first gear in the 700R4 as well (Plus I have an '89, so it is one of the better 700R4's). I also have the 241 Transfer case, which has a nice low range, but is chain driven, but I think it is a worth while compromise. I have had 3 K5's over the years (a '76, and '83, and now an '89), and unless I was just looking for a clean shell to swap everything into after a rollover, I would stick with the '87-'91 (I prefer the '89-'91 front end by far, but not a deal killer). I am swapping from TBI to TPI anyway, but I will never own another K5 without some sort of EFI on it.

For the type of wheeling I do, the low range works in the 205. Not as low as I would like it, but there is the Lomax kit available that would drop it to 3:1. Since I rarely use my low range (always taught that low was to get you out of places you shouldn't have been) it isn't really an effect. I would love to have the 700r4 just for the better economy, but it isn't enough to make me want the newer versions. Although I do like the newer 89-91 front ends, it isn't enough to make me buy one.

What if you wanted one, and didn't already have one? I think that was more the idea. You didn't give any reasons why you would prefer yours over a newer one, just that yours works out for you. Isn't that lomax kit complicated (Involving new case parts and such?). If it was a simple gear swap, I would probably convert to a 205 (If that can even be done on a 700R4).

Here is reality, I only bought my Blazer in March of this year. I had been looking for a 80 for a long time. As for reasons, as I listed, it has a unique grille that isn't on any other year, it is simple to work on, and it is the first year of the Silverado package. In the area I live in, there are literally almost a hundred Blazers, either on the road or being rebuilt, yet not another 80 with the chrome grille option. I wouldn't say it is better or worse than any other year, I just like that it is unique. I also searched for nearly 12 years before I found an 80, and I got lucky and it isn't too rusted.

As for the Lomax kit, it isn't that it is really complicated, it does involve swapping the gears and one section of the case to make a little extra room for the wider gears. Everything that is needed is included, so it would just take a day to do it. And you can mount a 205 to a 700r4, I have been looking for a good 700 to put into my K5.

If I was to start over I would forget about a blazer and pick up a K30 with a 465 and 454. Not a worry about the rest, dont look back and be happy. :) Thats if I wanted another trail truck. If I was looking for a driver I would get me a blazer like the one I have now but unmolested. Stock '87, 350/700 would be just fine, it would have to be super clean, have a nice stereo, 33' on a 2" lift, and a nice paint job. I would just drive that sucker everyday.

Yeah can we pick trucks? Like a '91 K30 crew cab... 4L80E with the 205 behind it, and a 454?:D

But if I had to start over with a K5, I'd get another '89-91', just in worst shape then the one I have... mine was so purdy when I started...(it still is but I'm afraid to scratch it up...) Spend less money on the truck itself and have money left over for mods.

nuttin on my rig is stock anymore, save the (modified) frame. I would definitely get a rig that had TBI. Everything else will get swapped out anyway. The only draw to the old school for me would be to dodge emissions laws... but for a ORO rig, who cares.

I think I would want an '87-'91 with a 465/(208/241). Super low gearing, TBI, plus I really like the way the later trucks look.

The 80's Q-jets aren't nearly as good as the early ones.

IMO, the 80-86 K5's are the least desireable of all of them. Emissions, the later Q-jets, early 700R4's :doah:, 208's, etc. all make them the worst run of K5's.

Hence why I swapped a edlebrock intake and carb, and swapped in a 456 and 205 into my 83. My big plus is that I am emmitions exempt

If I had to do it over, I would've bought a 73-75. Not for the removable top but, for the emissions exempt(coming soon, 35 years old is cut off time)! Pre 72 would work well too but, I kinda like second gen better for my intended setup. I bought my 87 thinking it would be emissions exempt here but, it's not. NCDMV makes no darn sense but, anyway, that's a topic of a big rant I won't go into. Suffice it to say, I wanted a Ramjet 350 and ended up having to go with a stock replacement crate 350, yawn. Oh well, eventually I'll figure out a way to get a Ramjet in there and still pass, move to SC if I have to!:D It's the smog (or air, whatever ya want to say) pump that the NCDMV is giving me grief over. If it weren't for NCDMV, I'd be totally happy and content with my 87 GMC Jimmy, stock: 350 (TBI) / 465 (hydro), swaps to come: 203/205 doubler, D60/14BFF, soon! Carolina blue exterior, blue interior, vinyl seats, hotness (IMO) 87 frontend! Absolutely perfectly the truck I wanted to get (except for NCDMV idiocy!). Paid too much $4400 but, it's pretty!

Damn! 35 years there! We are at the 25 year cut off up here in WA.. In one more month, we can run as new as an '83 with no emissions!

I didn't read this this whole thread, but I'm just now starting to figure out this whole points/carb business on the '76. I want another truck to run that doesn't have a 1000# fiberglass gorilla on the back, and I think I'm going to buy a 70's model with carbed 350/465/205.

Of those options the TBI of course...

...but where's the diesel option?

Lets see.....

I think I would get a '91 project Blazer and and '89 parts Blazer for spares...., but that's just me. Afterall I didn't buy them.... well OK, I didn't buy the second one on accident. :D

I like my 77,its got a few comfort options and its super easy to work on.The footwell from a 78 would be nice though. So 77-79ish

i thought 80 was 1st yr of silverado also

but its not...1975 was...i saw some1 on craigslist advertising a 77 silverado pu, i jumped in and said it cant be...80 was 1st yr,that some1 must have put silverado badges on it....he got smartass...told me not to post shyt, that i didn't know b/c some1 may take it as truth and put a link to 77 sales brochure showing silverado was indeed available in 77....so i started researching and found it came out in 75...heres 75 sales brochure

heres the link

http://brochures.slosh.com/index.shtml?1975

check it out, click link then select pickup from left hand column, then 3rd page over is page above!

edit:'80 1st yr for blazer to get silverado package, but not 1st yr of silverado package, i just learned that...hmm...sorry....talking shyt i dont know again...still thats a good link to sales brochures!

I should have been clearer on that subject. First year for Blazer is correct, but not the first year of the Silverado package.

I'm pretty happy with mine.. fix the little things first then I'll start on the mods.. can't wheel till I get some decent tires though :o
