Hey everybody! I was wondering if someone could give me some instruction on replacing my ignition switch. just wondering if i have to pull the wheel and/or drop the column... and how. any help would be greatly appreciated... thanks!

Interesting screen name...

Try this thread - you MAY need up to 3 specialty tools to completely disassemble the column (if it's loose) but you can actually make 1 of the tools yourself. To swap out an ignition, you'll at least need a steering wheel puller and maybe the lock plate compressor. If you have all the tools, it should take about 30-45 mins to get to the ignition.

I grew up in a town that had a bridge so the neighboring town called it trollville... lol. thanks a lot! Ill check it out!

I would STRONGLY suggest you at least have the lock plate tool... very hard to do the snap ring without it... may want a steering wheel puller too..

you don't have to drop the column... pull wheel, horn, lockplate, turn signal, yada.. that gets ya down in to where the cylinder is..

give yourself some time for this.. don't rush, take note of the order things come out, etc...

Cool... thanks for the input gonna give it a shot tomorrow!

Am i going to need the pivot pin removal tool? About to go hunt some tools....

nope .

local autozone or like store that does loan-a-tool program should have you covered.

and just to be clear you wana change the ignition KEY switch not the ignition POWER switch . the power switch requires no special tools .

lots of people get this mixed up .

No the power switch! Had to wiggle shift lever to start n now it won't... so i don't need anything? I'm confused... lol

the ign power switch is down by the firewall, mounted to the top of the column... it's what the keyed switch up in the column operates... the key switch has a round rod attached to it that runs down the top of the column down to the power switch... the rod has a bend at the end that fits into the power switch and slides it back and forth to activate it, off, run, crank..

you can check it further by removing the 2 small screws that attach it to the column and hand-operate it with a small screwdriver... it has 2 electric harness plugs that go into it..

the switch does have a small bit of adjustment where it attaches to the column.. but than you usually just have off and run, but it wont crank...

Lets clarify.

The ignition switch is at the base of the column. The lock cylinder is what you put the key in.

The ignition switch is what does all the "work". It has the electrical contacts that make the starter turn over, turn on accessories, etc.

The lock cylinder pushes on the ignition switch when you turn the key.

To get the ignition switch, you can normally remove all the trim underneath the steering column, remove the two 15MM nuts that hold column to dash (disconnect shift indicator cable from column first), and that will allow the column to come down a few inches, which might be enough for you to access the ignition switch a bit easier.

Ok now its makin more sense should the key be turned towards me w tilt? Backwards? I think that's what my instr say....

Yeah i understand the diff between the two. i was wondring if it had to be in a certain pos in orfer for the rod that goes into other switch to be in a particular position for removal install

no, it wont matter when pulling the bottom ign switch, but leave the key in the "off" position..... if you remove the 2 screws, the switch will pull out of the rod...

you can usually get it with the column up, but it is very tight up in there....

^^^good catch fellas - sorry trollman for the accidental derail of your project:confused:. I had 'ass'u'me'd it was the key lock in the column you were trying to replace. Yeup, the switch is a little easier to get to than the lock. Hope you were able to replace it.

Ok... well put it in and put it back together it was in the wrong position. put the key in aux backward so the pushrod went all the way forward anddid the same on power switch. now the lights cm on in p and n. so i believe its in there correctly. now I'm wondring if the rod is slightly bent and isnt pulling back far enough to turn the key? I was wondering if i can detach it and see if it tries to turn over by sticking a screwdriver in the power switch instead of the rod? That way i figure i can ruule that out..the starters only mos old and i have s fuseable links that look good under dash...

You guys are great i appriciate all the help. its like 5 out... gonna hVe to get back out there in the morn... the research continues! Lol
